Proteasome Inhibition Improves the Muscle of Laminin {alpha}2 Chain Deficient Mice.

Muscle atrophy, a significant characteristic of congenital muscular dystrophy with laminin α2 chain deficiency (also known as MDC1A), occurs by a change in the normal balance between protein synthesis and protein degradation. The ubiquitin-proteasome system plays a key role in protein degradation in skeletal muscle cells. In order to identify new targets for drug therapy against MDC1A, we have inv

The emission factor of volatile isoprenoids: stress, acclimation, and developmental responses

The rate of constitutive isoprenoid emissions from plants is driven by plant emission capacity under specified environmental conditions (E-S, the emission factor) and by responsiveness of the emissions to instantaneous variations in environment. In models of isoprenoid emission, E-S has been often considered as intrinsic species-specific constant invariable in time and space. Here we analyze the v

Reduction of cyanobacterial toxins through coprophagy in Mytilus edulis

An experiment was conducted to follow the fate of the cyanobacterial toxin, nodularin, produced by Nodularia spumigena through ingestion by Mytilus edulis and re-ingestion of faecal material (coprophagy). Mussels were fed with cultures of N. spumigena, and the faeces that were produced were fed to other mussels not previously exposed to N. spumigena. Concentrations of nodularin were measured in th

Electronic structure calculations of mercury mobilization from mineral phases and photocatalytic removal from water and the atmosphere

Mercury is a hazardous environmental pollutant mobilized from natural sources, and anthropogenically contaminated and disturbed areas. Current methods to assess mobility and environmental impact are mainly based on field measurements, soil monitoring, and kinetic modelling. In order to understand in detail the extent to which different mineral sources can give rise to mercury release it is necessa

Nonlinear compartmental model of F-18-choline

Introduction: This work develops a compartmental model of F-18-choline in order to evaluate its biokinetics and so to describe the temporal variation of the radiopharmaceuticals' uptake in and clearance from organs and tissues. Methods: Ten patients were considered in this study. A commercially available tool for compartmental analysis (SAAM II) was used to model the values of activity concentrati

Diameter Limitation in Growth of III-Sb-Containing Nanowire Heterostructures.

The nanowire geometry offers significant advantages for exploiting the potential of III-Sb materials. Strain due to lattice mismatch is efficiently accommodated, and carrier confinement effects can be utilized in tunneling and quantum devices for which the III-Sb materials are of particular interest. It has however proven difficult to grow thin (below a few tens of nanometers), epitaxial III-Sb na

Stellar intensity interferometry: Prospects for sub-milliarcsecond optical imaging

Using kilometric arrays of air Cherenkov telescopes at short wavelengths, intensity interferometry may increase the spatial resolution achieved in optical astronomy by an order of magnitude, enabling images of rapidly rotating hot stars with structures in their circumstellar disks and winds, or mapping out patterns of nonradial pulsations across stellar surfaces. Intensity interferometry (once pio

Brain responses to syntax constrained by time-driven implicit prosodic phrases

Previous research suggests that time-based working memory limits of 2-3 s constrain the integration of verbal information, and that speakers tend to parse sentences into prosodic phrases that do not extend beyond this time window. The present study used Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) to investigate how time-driven implicit prosodic phrasing influences the syntactic processing of embedded clauses.

A grounding framework

In order for an agent to achieve its objectives, make sound decisions, communicate and collaborate with others effectively it must have high quality representations. Representations can encapsulate objects, situations, experiences, decisions and behavior just to name a few. Our interest is in designing high quality representations, therefore it makes sense to ask of any representation; what does i

Challenges in implementation of research methodology in community-based occupational therapy: The Housing Enabler Example.

This paper focuses on challenges in implementation of research in community-based occupational therapy practice. Based on a two-year project in a south Swedish municipality aiming at studying implementation of structured assessment procedures in the housing adaptation process, the first purpose is to provide a detailed project description, and the second is to report on first results identifying c

The Solling roof revisited - slow recovery from acidification observed and modeled despite a decade of "clean-rain" treatment

Soil chemistry under the Solling clean-rain roof was simulated using the dynamic multi-layer soil chemistry model SAFE, including sulfate adsorption. Soil was sampled in order to parameterize the pH and sulfate concentration dependent sulfate adsorption isotherm used in SAFE. Modeled soil solution chemistry was compared to the 14 year long time-series of monthly measurements of soil solution data

Sexual desires and 'social evils': Young women in rural Vietnam

Vietnam's increased integration into the global market economy entails rapid and dynamic changes that foster new ways of acting, interacting and rendering the world meaningful. This article addresses the ways in which an ongoing process of transformation in contemporary Vietnam is epitomised by the ambivalence and ambiguity with which female sexuality is imbued. Female sexuality is ideally restric

Towards an artificial model for Photosystem II: a manganese(II,II) dimer covalently linked to ruthenium(II) tris-bipyridine via a tyrosine derivative

In order to model the individual electron transfer steps from the manganese cluster to the photooxidized sensitizer P680+ in Photosystem II (PS II) in green plants, the supramolecular complex 4 has been synthesized. In this complex, a ruthenium(II) tris-bipyridine type photosensitizer has been linked to a manganese(II) dimer via a substituted l-tyrosine, which bridges the manganese ions. The trinu

A comparative study of ordinary and mineralised Portland cement clinker from two different production units Part II: Characteristics of the calcium silicates

Portland cement clinkers from two production units were investigated in order to determine the effects of mineralisation on alite and belite; Plant 1: ordinary clinker (P1) and clinker mineralised with CaF2 + CaSO4 (P1M); Plant 2: ordinary clinker (P2) and two clinkers mineralised with CaF2 + CaSO4 (P2m, P2m'). The polymorphism of alite was studied using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (XRD),

Decentralised paediatric HIV care in Ethiopia: a comparison between outcomes of patients managed in health centres and in a hospital clinic.

Background : In order to increase access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) in HIV-infected children, paediatric HIV care has been introduced in health centres in Ethiopia, where patients are managed by health professionals with limited training. Objective : To compare outcomes of paediatric HIV care in hospital and health centre clinics and to determine risk factors for death and loss to follow-up (

Självet och subjektets svårgripbara nödvändighet: utkast till en socialpsykologisk kritik av Judith Butler

In her widely cited and criticised Gender trouble, Judith Butler (1990) elaborated the thought that gender needs to be understood as performative – a certain kind of doing behind the bars of a hegemonic heterosexual imperative that governs intelligible bodily configurations. Drawing mainly on psychoanalytical and foucauldian arguments, Butler dwells upon numerous important questions concerning pow

High-temperature and high-concentration SCR of NO with NH3: Application in a CCS process for removal of carbon dioxide

This study investigates several commercial selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts (A–E) for application in a high-temperature (approximately 525 °C) and high-concentration (5000 ppm NO) system in combination with CO2 capture. The suggested process for removing high concentrations of NOx seems plausible and autothermal operation is possible for very high NO concentrations. A key property of

Analysis and characterization of a video-on-demand service workload

Video-on-Demand (VoD) and video sharing services account for a large percentage of the total downstream Internet traffic. In order to provide a better understanding of the load on these services, we analyze and model a workload trace from a VoD service provided by a major Swedish TV broadcaster. The trace contains over half a million requests generated by more than 20000 unique users. Among other
