Pseudomonas aeruginosa in cystic fibrosis: Pyocyanin negative strains are associated with BPI-ANCA and progressive lung disease.

The clinical consequence of chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa colonization in cystic fibrosis (CF) varies between individuals for unknown reasons. Auto-antibodies against bactericidal/permeability increasing protein (BPI-ANCA) are associated with poor prognosis in CF. We hypothesize that there is a correlation between the presence of BPI-ANCA, the properties of the colonizing bacteria and the clinica

Motivated Risk Assessments

How do people assess risks associated with a hedonic but dangerous activity? I conduct a longitudinal field experiment (N=434) exploiting the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic to investigate whether monetary incentives induce people to motivate their risk assessments. Each participant receives a café voucher with a random value: treated participants receive a 10EUR voucher, and the control group

Tumor angiogenesis and prognosis in squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck

BACKGROUND: The progression of tumor growth requires the recruitment of new blood vessels. It has been suggested that the degree of neovascularization would correlate with clinical prognosis. The purpose of the present study was to ascertain whether tumor vascularization correlated with clinical outcome in cases of primary squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN).METHODS: In tumor biop

Association between neonatal mortality and births not weighed among 400 thousand institutional deliveries in 32 low- and middle-income countries

BACKGROUND: Low birthweight (LBW) children have a higher risk of neonatal mortality. All institutional deliveries, therefore, should be weighed to determine appropriate care. Mortality risk for newborns who are not weighed at birth (NWB) is unknown.METHODS: This paper used logit regression models to compare the odds of death for NWB neonates to that of other neonates using data on 401 712 institut

Hepatitis C in chronic liver disease: an epidemiological study based on 566 consecutive patients undergoing liver biopsy during a 10-year period

We analysed the presence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibodies in 566 patients undergoing liver biopsy. While over 20% of the patients were anti-HCV positive according to ELISA, only 13.8% had HCV antibodies when tested with a four-antigen recombinant immunoblot assay (RIBA 2). At the time of inclusion in the study, most patients were asymptomatic, irrespective of whether they were HCV-positive. H
