Versatile microporous polymer-based supports for serial macromolecular crystallography

Serial data collection has emerged as a major tool for data collection at state-of-the-art light sources, such as microfocus beamlines at synchrotrons and X-ray free-electron lasers. Challenging targets, characterized by small crystal sizes, weak diffraction and stringent dose limits, benefit most from these methods. Here, the use of a thin support made of a polymer-based membrane for performing s

Fractionation of sugar beet pulp polysaccharides into component sugars and pre-feasibility analysis for further valorisation

Sugar beet pulp (SBP) is a by-product formed in large amounts during the production of refined sugar and is currently used as a low-cost feed for livestock. The dry SBP comprises largely three polysaccharides (75–85%), cellulose, hemicellulose and pectin, whose component sugars constitute potential valuable feedstock for producing building blocks for chemicals and materials. In the present study,

Relativistic Hydrodynamics : A Singulant Perspective

There is growing evidence that the hydrodynamic gradient expansion is factorially divergent. We advocate for using Dingle's singulants as a way to gain analytic control over its large-order behavior for nonlinear flows. Within our approach, singulants can be viewed as new emergent degrees of freedom which reorganize the large-order gradient expansion. We work out the physics of singulants for long

Using Patchy Particles to Prevent Local Rearrangements in Models of Non-equilibrium Colloidal Gels

Simple models based on isotropic interparticle attractions often fail to capture experimentally observed structures of colloidal gels formed through spinodal decomposition and subsequent arrest: the resulting gels are typically denser and less branched than their experimental counterparts. Here, we simulate gels formed from soft particles with directional attractions ("patchy particles"), designed

2HDME : Two-Higgs-Doublet Model Evolver

Two-Higgs-Doublet Model Evolver (2HDME) is a C++ program that provides the functionality to perform fast renormalization group equation running of the general, potentially CP-violating, 2 Higgs Doublet Model at 2-loop order. Simple tree-level calculations of masses; calculations of the oblique parameters S, T and U; different parameterizations of the scalar potential; tests of perturbativity, unit

Does Large-Scale Gold Mining Reduce Agricultural Growth? : Case studies from Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali and Tanzania

We apply a novel analytical framework based on medium resolution satellite data for the period 2001 – 2012 to estimate the effects of gold mining on agricultural production in Ghana, Mali, Tanzania and Burkina Faso. Our analysis finds a strong correlation between official statistics of agricultural production and vegetation index from satellite data at district level in these countries. Agricultur

Optimal power and efficiency of single quantum dot heat engines : Theory and experiment

Quantum dots (QDs) can serve as near perfect energy filters and are therefore of significant interest for the study of thermoelectric energy conversion close to thermodynamic efficiency limits. Indeed, recent experiments in [Nat. Nano. 13, 920 (2018)1748-338710.1038/s41565-018-0200-5] realized a QD heat engine with performance near these limits and in excellent agreement with theoretical predictio

An Overview of Knowledge Extraction Projects in the NLP group at Lund University

In this paper, I describe systems and prototypes we created in the natural language processing group at Lund to extract structured knowledge from text. Starting from syntactic and semantic parsingcomponents, wedevelopedapplicationsthatcanhandlelargecorpora, typicallycomplete Wikipedia versions consisting of millions of documents and process text to identify entities and the relations between them. Extent of myocardium at risk for left anterior descending artery, right coronary artery, and left circumflex artery occlusion depicted by contrast-enhanced steady state free precession and T2-weighted short tau inversion recovery magnetic resonance imaging

Background - Contrast-enhanced steady state free precession (CE-SSFP) and T2-weighted short tau inversion recovery (T2-STIR) have been clinically validated to estimate myocardium at risk (MaR) by cardiovascular magnetic resonance while using myocardial perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography as reference standard. Myocardial perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography has bee

CMOS Integrated Remote Antenna Unit for Fiber-Fed Distributed MIMO Systems

A fully integrated remote antenna unit (RAU) intended for fiber-fed distributed multiple-input multiple-output systems is presented. The circuit is designed for narrowband (60 MHz) time-division duplex systems, where an IF over fiber approach is chosen to facilitate the use of low-cost optical components and integrated photodetectors. A novel antenna switch control scheme is introduced, which enab

Neutron structures of Leishmania mexicana triosephosphate isomerase in complex with reaction-intermediate mimics shed light on the proton-shuttling steps

Triosephosphate isomerase (TIM) is a key enzyme in glycolysis that catalyses the interconversion of glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate and dihydroxy-acetone phosphate. This simple reaction involves the shuttling of protons mediated by protolysable side chains. The catalytic power of TIM is thought to stem from its ability to facilitate the deprotonation of a carbon next to a carbonyl group to generate an

Perceived healthcare stigma among patients in opioid substitution treatment : a qualitative study

Background: People with substance use disorders (SUD) including patients in opioid substitution treatment (OST) are subject to stigma, and have generally poor health and barriers towards seeking healthcare. Experience of stigma might negatively affect healthcare seeking, but this topic is sparsely investigated. The aim of this study was to explore OST patients’ past and present experiences of subs

Approximate Counting of k-Paths : Simpler, Deterministic, and in Polynomial Space

Recently, Brand et al. [STOC 2018] gave a randomized mathcal O(4kmϵ-2-time exponential-space algorithm to approximately compute the number of paths on k vertices in a graph G up to a multiplicative error of 1 ± ϵ based on exterior algebra. Prior to our work, this has been the state-of-the-art. In this article, we revisit the algorithm by Alon and Gutner [IWPEC 2009, TALG 2010], and obtain the foll

Testing Self-Adaptive Software with Probabilistic Guarantees on Performance Metrics : Extended and Comparative Results

This paper discusses methods to test the performance of the adaptation layer in a self-adaptive system. The problem is notoriously hard, due to the high degree of uncertainty and variability inherent in an adaptive software application. In particular, providing any type of formal guarantee for this problem is extremely difficult. In this paper we propose the use of a rigorous probabilistic approac

Autonomous ground vehicle lane-keeping LPV model-based control : Dual-rate state estimation and comparison of different real-time control strategies

In this contribution, we suggest two proposals to achieve fast, real-time lane-keeping control for Autonomous Ground Vehicles (AGVs). The goal of lane-keeping is to orient and keep the vehicle within a given reference path using the front wheel steering angle as the control action for a specific longitudinal velocity. While nonlinear models can describe the lateral dynamics of the vehicle in an ac
