A majority of Swedes are open to boycotting American products

According to a new study from Lund University in Sweden, approximately one in five Swedes are already choosing not to buy American brands. The majority would consider boycotting American products such as Coca-Cola in favour of European or Swedish alternatives. A study conducted by brand researchers at Lund University in Sweden, in cooperation with Norstat Sweden, shows that virtually all Swedish c

Can technological innovations in entertainment boost academic performance?

For decades, doctors have warned parents that too much TV can harm children’s development. After all, television is one of the main activities in kids’ daily lives, and school performance plays a crucial role in shaping their future opportunities in the job market. It’s no wonder that physicians and educators have long been concerned about how hours spent in front of the screen might affect learni

Death is our textbook on life

Pathologists and coroners are now commonplace in crime novels and TV crime series and are often depicted as slightly odd people. Elisabet Englund has worked at the Division of Pathology in Lund for over 40 years. She has often been told that she is a little ‘too happy’ to be a pathologist. “Yes, there is a stereotype of people who work with dead people, which perhaps contributes to the mystificati

Tracking owls that send SMS from their nests

This article is over 5 years old, and the information may therefore be outdated. The owlet, little over three weeks old, squints slightly as Hannah Watson lays it on its back in a plastic container that once held vanilla ice cream. It seems quite happy there. Things get a little trickier when the owlet is to be measured, weighed and swabbed for bacterial samples from both front and behind. Finally

Always check the magasine carefully

The idea of publishing research findings in open access journals is in many ways an asset in the research community. Unfortunately, it has also entailed the emergence of many unprofessional agents on the market. Their only purpose is to trick researchers into giving them money. Not only does a successful researcher need to produce good research, their findings must also be visible among tough comp

We are looking for new colleagues

Lund University is driving a unique initiative to recruit top international researchers. Help us to convince prospective colleagues from around the world to choose Lund. In recent times, many countries have seen a decline in opportunities to conduct research and get a university education. This is due to cutbacks in grants as well as stricter immigration rules that have made it more difficult for

Internationalisation – important, comprehensive and complex

Internationalisation has become more important – and more complex – in recent years. In a world where democracy and academic freedom are under threat, Lund University needs to take greater responsibility for its international collaboration, according to International Coordinator Pär Svensson. In recent years, the focus on internationalisation, through the Global Dynamic Engagement (GDE) approach i

Machine learning drives drug repurposing for neuroblastoma

Using machine learning and a large volume of data on genes and existing drugs, researchers at Lund University in Sweden have identified a combination of statins and phenothiazines that is particularly promising in the treatment of the aggressive form of neuroblastoma. The results from experimental trials showed slowing of tumour growth and higher survival rates. The childhood cancer, neuroblastoma

How your lifestyle can affect your risk of dementia

Almost half of all dementia cases can be attributed to risk factors that we potentially can influence ourselves, such as smoking and high blood pressure. A new study from Lund University shows which risk factors are associated with two of our most common causes of dementia – Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. During our lifetime, the risk of developing dementia is influenced by aspects tha

AI support in breast cancer screening: Fewer missed cancer cases

There were fewer cases of breast cancer between two screening rounds, and of the cancers that did develop, fewer were advanced or aggressive. The final results from Lund University's MASAI trial are now available, and they show further benefits of AI-supported breast cancer screening. The study has already shown that AI support in mammography screening contributes to a 29 percent increase in detec
