“We’re trying to make materials that are more sustainable, economically as well as environmentally”

By studying how materials build themselves and by mimicking those processes, it is possible to create materials with new structures and properties. This is what Wallenberg Scholar Kimberly Dick Thelander, professor of materials science at Lund University, is doing. At the nano scale, which is measured in billionths of a meter, phenomena occur that do not otherwise exist. Thelander and her colleagu

Solar fuel conundrum nears a solution

Solar energy stored in the form of fuel is something scientists hope could partially replace fossil fuels in the future. Researchers may have solved a long-standing problem that has hindered the development of sustainable solar fuels. If solar energy can be used more efficiently using iron-based systems, this could pave the way for cheaper solar fuels. “We can now see previously hidden mechanisms

Nanowire thickness alters GaAs band structure

Physics World reports that Researchers at NanoLund have grown single continuous GaAs nanowires consisting of segments of pure wurtzite and zincblende phases. Using photoluminescence spectroscopy, they found that the spatial confinement along the radius of a nanowire resulted in bending of the band structure of the material.Read the article "Radial band bending at wurtzite–zinc-blende–GaAs interfac

When semiconductors meets insulating layers

Understanding interface formation between InAs semiconductors and hafnium dioxide insulating layers Most semiconductor devices are still based on silicon, even though other semiconductor materials such as InAs have superior electrical properties. The problem with these materials is that their interface towards thin insulating layers, which are needed for e.g. transistor processing, contains many d
