A novel mutation on the transferrin gene abolishes one N-glycosylation site and alters the pattern of transferrin isoforms, mimicking that observed after excessive alcohol consumption.
In the process of obtaining a driver's license, a healthy 28year old man presented increased levels of disialo-transferrin (TF) (approx. 20%, ref. value<2) by HPLC analysis of TF isoforms (%CDT), while other markers of excessive alcohol consumption (PEth, MCV and γ-GT) were in the normal range. The objective of this study was to determine the cause of the increased %CDT levels.
Identification of covalent binding sites of ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate, methyl methacrylate and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate in human hemoglobin using LC/MS/MS techniques.
Acrylates are used in vast quantities, for instance in paints, adhesive glues, molding. They are potent contact allergens and known to cause respiratory hypersensitivity and asthma. Here we study ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate (ECA), methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). There are only limited possibilities to measure the exposure to acrylates, especially for biological monitori
Review of ‘Sites of Violence: Gender and Conflict Zones’ (2004), W. Giles and J. Hyndman (eds.)
The proximal promoter of the human cathepsin G gene conferring myeloid-specific expression includes C/EBP, c-myb and PU.1 binding sites.
The A phenotype in the ABO blood group system is due to a splice-site mutation in a hybrid between a new O-like allelic lineage and the A allele.

Fracture mapping using seismic amplitude variation with offset and azimuth analysis at the Weyburn CO2 storage site
Cap rock integrity is an essential characteristic of any reservoir to be used for long-term CO 2 storage. Seismic AVOA (amplitude variation with offset and azimuth) techniques have been applied to map HTI anisotropy near the cap rock of the Weyburn field in southeast Saskatchewan, Canada, with the purpose of identifying potential fracture zones that may compromise seal integrity. This analysis, su
Effect of a COL1A1 Sp1 binding site polymorphism on arterial pulse wave velocity : an index of compliance
-Reduced arterial compliance precedes changes in blood pressure, which may be mediated through alterations in vessel wall matrix composition. We investigated the effect of the collagen type I-alpha1 gene (COL1A1) +2046G>T polymorphism on arterial compliance in healthy individuals. We recruited 489 subjects (251 men and 238 women; mean age, 22.6+/-1.6 years). COL1A1 genotypes were determined using

A Palette of Fluorescent Aβ42 Peptides Labelled at a Range of Surface-Exposed Sites
Fluorescence-based single molecule techniques provide important tools towards understanding the molecular mechanism of complex neurodegenerative diseases. This requires efficient covalent attachment of fluorophores. Here we create a series of cysteine mutants (S8C, Y10C, S26C, V40C, and A42C) of Aβ42, involved in Alzheimer’s disease, based on exposed positions in the fibril structure and label the

Counterintuitive Electrostatics upon Metal Ion Coordination to a Receptor with Two Homotopic Binding Sites
The consecutive binding of two potassium ions to a bis(18-crown-6) analogue of Tröger’s base (BCETB) in water was studied by isothermal titration calorimetry using four different salts, KCl, KI, KSCN, and K2SO4. A counterintuitive result was observed: the enthalpy change associated with the binding of the second ion is more negative than that of the first (ΔH°bind,2 < ΔH°bind,1). This remarkable f
De-bordering and re-bordering practices at the intersection of gender and migration. A multi-site exploration of specialized services for migrant women experiencing violence in Italy and Sweden
This study builds on analyses of everyday professional practices to explore de-bordering and re-bordering processes in the field of gender-based violence (GBV). The concepts of de-bordering and re-bordering practices express the tensions arising from the conflictual roles taken on by civil society actors (CSAs) in their double vest of service delivery for the state and advocate for migrant women w
The Mediterranean Sea as a Site of Enforced Disappearances? - International Responsibility of European States in the Context of Migration
This thesis explores the question of whether European States, with a specific emphasis on European Union (EU) Member States, can be held responsible for the enforced disappearance of migrants in the Mediterranean Sea under the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). Following the migration crisis of 2015, EU policy and measures on migration revealed a strong focus on protecting the external bo
Investigating Y-site compatibility of intravenous drugs using Probe drum as analytical instrument
SoThere is a lack of data concerning compatibility between intravenously administered drugs, especially for doses administered in neonatal care. Co-administrating drugs or other substances used in hospital care, for instance parenteral nutrition that are incompatible with each other can, in worst case scenarios, lead to fatal outcomes. It is not only important to study drug incompatibility at differ

Does Fusobacterium in Colorectal Cancer Sites Originate From the Oral Cavity? A Pilot Study
Objectives: Fusobacterium can contribute to oral diseases, but also pose as a systemic risk factor. This genus, and especially F. nucleatum, can be found in colorectal cancer (CRC) tissue and is involved in multiple aspects of this type of cancer. Previous studies indicated a possible oral origin of these bacteria; however, stronger evidence is needed to reach a definitive conclusion. This pilot s
