New gene variants significantly increase the risk of blood clots

Blood clots can form in both arteries and veins. However, the reasons behind them differ, as do the consequences and the chances of preventing blood clots. In Sweden, almost half of all cases of venous thrombosis have a genetic explanation. A team of researchers from Lund University in Sweden has now discovered three gene variants that increase the risk of blood clots in the leg by up to 180 perce

Sun’s activity influences natural climate change

This article is over 5 years old, and the information may therefore be outdated. A new study from Lund University in Sweden has, for the first time, reconstructed solar activity during the last ice age. The study shows that the regional climate is influenced by the sun and offers opportunities to better predict future climate conditions in certain regions. For the first time, a research team has b

Novel nanostructure formation with atomic-scale precision

Site-selected crystal material synthesis at the atomic scale has been a long-standing challenge. NanoLundians Rainer Timm and Yi Liu use nanowire crystal phase heterostructures as templates for self-selective growth of one- and two-dimensional GaBi nanostructures, which allows a versatile design with atomic-scale precision. Scaling down material synthesis to crystalline structures only a few atoms

Organic farms had doubled plant diversity – but only over time

It takes a long time, up to several decades, before the benefits of organic farming take full effect on land that was previously cultivated conventionally, a new study from Lund University suggests. After thirty years, the plant species richness around the cultivated crop had doubled on organic farms compared to conventional farms. It is well known that organic farming benefits biodiversity and ca

How self-reactive immune cells are allowed to develop

Directly after birth, the immune system completes production of a subtype of antibody-producing immune cells, B-1, that are to last for a lifetime. No more B1-cells are formed after that point. However, these cells are self-reactive – they produce not only antibodies against foreign substances, but also against the body’s own substances, and it is unclear why the immune system allows for the devel
