The Cosmic Origin of Fluorine : An Astronomer's View on Fluorine Synthesis

All fluorine atoms in fluoride compounds discussed in this book were synthesized in the stars or in stellar processes well before the solar system was formed some 4.6. billion years ago. The main cosmic production sites are, however, still elusive. This is not only because it is challenging to empirically determine the buildup of fluorine abundance in the universe over time, but also because of th

Method for probabilistic energy calculations : variable parameters

Building regulations in Sweden require that an energy calculation is done for every building to show that the building design meets the maximum specific energy use as outlined in the Swedish Building Code. The result of this energy calculation is always one number, for example a building might use 89 kWh/m2 year when the building regulation requires 90 kWh/m2 year. This level of reporting can lead

We will take care of you’ : Identity categorisation markers in intercultural medical encounters

Ethnomethodology research has systematically investigated discursive practices of categorisation, looking at the various ways by which social actors ascribe both themselves and others to identity categories to accomplish various kinds of social actions. Drawing on a data corpus of oncological visits collected in an Italian hospital, involving both native and non-native patients, the present work a

Atmospheric Mercury Concentrations in Guangzhou City, Measured by Spectroscopic Techniques

Atmospheric levels of atomic mercury pollution were measured using spectroscopic techniques in the city of Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China. Assessments were mainly performed at ground level using a portable (vehicle mounted or hand carried) Zeeman modulation correlation spectrometer (Lumex RA-915M), and the results are given in easily comprehensible diagrams. Measurements were made with conti

Care pathways for people with major depressive disorder : A European Brain Council Value of Treatment study

Background Despite well-established guidelines for managing major depressive disorder, its extensive disability burden persists. This Value of Treatment mission from the European Brain Council aimed to elucidate the nature and extent of gaps between best-practice and current-practice care, specifically to: 1. Identify current treatment gaps along the care pathway and determine the extent of these

Chromosome-level genome assembly of Lilford's wall lizard, Podarcis lilfordi (Günther, 1874) from the Balearic Islands (Spain)

The Mediterranean lizard Podarcis lilfordi is an emblematic species of the Balearic Islands. The extensive phenotypic diversity among extant isolated populations makes the species a great insular model system for eco-evolutionary studies, as well as a challenging target for conservation management plans. Here we report the first high-quality chromosome-level assembly and annotation of the P. lilfo

Mechanical Reperfusion Following Prolonged Global Cerebral Ischemia Attenuates Brain Injury

Previous experiments demonstrated improved outcome following prolonged cerebral ischemia given controlled brain reperfusion using extracorporeal circulation. The current study further investigates this. Young adult pigs were exposed to 30 min of global normothermic cerebral ischemia, achieved through intrathoracic clamping of cerebral arteries, followed by 20 min of isolated mechanical brain reper

De katolska traditionalisterna : En ifrågasatt minoritet i den katolska kyrkan

The purpose of my article is to highlight the development and activities of the Catholic traditionalist minority groups and discuss their importance in today’s Catholic Church. The traditionalist movement started as a reaction to the reforms implemented as a result of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), which for many conservative minded Catholics appeared as a departure from Catholic faith anThe purpose of my article is to highlight the development and activities of the Catholic traditionalist minority groups and discuss their importance in today’s Catholic Church. The unresolved phylogenomic tree of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera) : Assessing the potential causes and consequences

The field of molecular phylogenetics is being revolutionized with next-generation sequencing technologies making it possible to sequence large numbers of genomes for non-model organisms ushering us into the era of phylogenomics. The current challenge is no longer how to get enough data, but rather how to analyse the data and how to assess the support for the inferred phylogeny. Here, we focus on o

Development of Circularly Recyclable Low Melting Temperature Bicomponent Fibers toward a Sustainable Nonwoven Application

Sustainable low melting temperature bicomponent polyester fibers that can be circularly recycled were developed. The potentially biobased poly(hexamethylene terephthalate) (PHT), acting as the low melting temperature sheath material in the designed bicomponent fibers, was synthesized in a pilot scale. The obtained PHT with an intrinsic viscosity of 0.47 dL/g showed suitable processability when it

Spatial Separation of Closely-Spaced Users in Measured Distributed Massive MIMO Channels

Aiming for the sixth generation (6G) wireless communications, distributed massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems hold significant potential for spatial multiplexing. In order to evaluate the ability of a distributed massive MIMO system to spatially separate closely spaced users, this paper presents an indoor channel measurement campaign. The measurements are carried out at a carrier

Matter matters : material communication and the role of book history in the curriculum of publishing studies

Books and other printed matter are media of communication, used to carry and distribute – mediate – "content". A medium, however, is always material, and as such it produces meaning in its own right. So even though content and medium might be separate and distinct entities, they are intimately connected, and in order to be communicated a piece of "content" is always given one or another material f

Adsorption of protein fractions from wheat onto methylated silica surfaces

The kinetics of the sequential adsorption of gliadins and water-soluble fraction (WSF) from the wheat variety Kosack onto hydrophobic silica (methylated silica) surfaces were studied by in situ ellipsometry. The measurements were made in water and in 0.01M acetate buffer, pH 4.0 and 5.0, with and without 0.1M NaCl. The concentration of gliadins and WSF was 1.7 µg/ml. The adsorption of gliadins in

OSL dating and luminescence characteristics of aeolian deposits and their source material in Dalarna, central Sweden

Aeolian dunes, coversands, glacifluvial deltas and paraglacial mass-movement deposits in Bonäsheden and Skattungheden in Dalarna, central Sweden were dated by optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) on quartz. The OSL ages confirm that the majority of the dunes started forming directly after deglaciation, as suggested by previous investigators. Dune formation seems to have lasted at least 1500 yea
