Managing Data from Maritime Archaeology Investigations : AIR at Gribshunden

Maritime archaeology excavations, even in a more complex environment, have the same objectives and requirements as terrestrial ones: documenting digging operations to analyze data in the best way, interpreting it, and producing new knowledge for the benefit of multiple communities. 3D documentation and management methodologies have spread widely among practitioners; however, 3D comprehensive tools

Theoretical insights into the aerobic hydrogenase activity of molybdenum-copper CO dehydrogenase

The Mo/Cu-dependent CO dehydrogenase from O. carboxidovorans is an enzyme that is able to catalyse CO oxidation to CO2; moreover, it also expresses hydrogenase activity, as it is able to oxidize H2. Here, we have studied the dihydrogen oxidation catalysis by this enzyme using QM/MM calculations. Our results indicate that the equatorial oxo ligand of Mo is the best suited base for catalysis. Fast simulated annealing inversion of surface waves on pavement using phase-velocity spectra

The conventional inversion of surface waves depends on modal identification of measured dispersion curves, which can be ambiguous. It is possible to avoid mode-number identification and extraction by inverting the complete phase-velocity spectrum obtained from a multichannel record. We use the fast simulated annealing (FSA) global search algorithm to minimize the difference between the measured ph

Women with Disabilities, Peace and Security in Liberia: Liberian disabled women’s experiences of peace and security processes through the lens of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325

This study has examined Liberian disabled women’s participation in peace and security processes through the lens of the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325. The aim was to gain new insights into Liberian disabled women’s experience in peace and security processes, since the overarching research problem is the lack of insight into the disabled women’s experiences as participants

The Sustainable Future of Music Festivals: How can new policy instruments and voluntary guidance tools help music festivals become more sustainable?

Over the last decade the music festival sector grew enormously: in 2008 over a million festivalgoers gathered in the UK to share music and companionship. However in doing so musicfestivals generate large volumes of waste streams and consume large quantities of resources. Amusic festival of more than 40 000 people will produce in the order of 2000 tons of CO2e –with audience transportation and on s

Winter wheat yield prediction using UAV imagery and machine learning: case studies in Sweden and Morocco

To address global food security challenges caused by population growth and climate change, accurate prediction of crop yield is essential for sustainable agriculture. Winter wheat, a key global crop, faces production instability in regions like Sweden and Morocco due to extreme weather conditions. This study employed unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based multispectral imagery and digital surface mod

Grasslands ancient and modern : Soil nutrients, habitat age and their relation to Ellenberg N

Questions: To what extent does the long-term process of grassland succession reflect changes in nutrient availability or other effects of grassland history? Plant communities in ancient, semi-natural pastures include many species associated with nutrient-poor soils. However, semi-natural pasture communities can also develop on previously arable sites — as nutrient levels decline over time. In Euro

Studies of Novel Nanostructures by Cross- sectional Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

This thesis presents structural and morphological studies of semiconductor nanostructures, namely quantum dots, nanowires and a dilute ferromagnetic semiconductor. These nanostructures are investigated on the atomic scale using cross-sectional scanning tunneling microscopy (XSTM). Indium arsenide (InAs) quantum dots in both an indium phosphide (InP) and GaAs matrix are studied. The InAs/InP quantu

Quantitative vegetation reconstruction from pollen analysis and historical inventory data around a Danish small forest hollow

Questions Can the model performance of the landscape reconstruction algorithm (LRA) for small forest hollows be validated through comparison to inventory-based vegetation reconstructions from the last 150yrs? Does the application of LRA and the comparison to historical data enhance interpretation of the pollen record? Location Denmark. The Gribskov-Ostrup small forest hollow (56 degrees N, 12 degr

Seasonal reconstructions coupling ice core data and an isotope-enabled climate model - Methodological implications of seasonality, climate modes and selection of proxy data

The research area of climate field reconstructions has developed strongly during the past 20 years, motivated by the need to understand the complex dynamics of the earth system in a changing climate. Climate field reconstructions aim to build a consistent gridded climate reconstruction of different variables, often from a range of climate proxies, using either statistical tools or a climate model

The Applicability of Geoelectrical Methods in Pre-Investigation for Construction in Rock

Construction in rock is associated with risks because knowledge of the geology and ground conditions is limited. Unforeseen rock conditions involve a large risk to the project and can in the end entail delays and extra costs. To minimize the risks, an optimized pre-investigation program has to be conducted where essential information is gathered in order to make the best decisions throughout the c

Resolving the problem of trapped water in binding cavities : prediction of host–guest binding free energies in the SAMPL5 challenge by funnel metadynamics

The funnel metadynamics method enables rigorous calculation of the potential of mean force along an arbitrary binding path and thereby evaluation of the absolute binding free energy. A problem of such physical paths is that the mechanism characterizing the binding process is not always obvious. In particular, it might involve reorganization of the solvent in the binding site, which is not easily c

Separation of coal-tar constituents from soil particles in a two-liquid-phase slurry system

An evaluation has been made of the capability of rapeseed oil to dissolve polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) crystals in a biphasic system and of its capability to extract PAHs from polluted soil in a two-liquid-phase (TLP) slurry system. Up to 220 g l(-1) of the crystalline hydrocarbons could be dissolved in the organic phase, indicating oil/water-partitioning coefficients of 10(5). When soil

Today this environment is threatened by lack of disturbance, fragmentation and exploitation, acidification and increased levels of nitrogen and phosphorus. Traditional management such as mowing and grazing have proven unsuitable for restoring pop

Dam fish! Genetic and ecological study of the Rönne å populations of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and brown trout (Salmo trutta)

Anthropogenic activities such as hydropower exploitation have been one of the main drivers of anadromous fish biodiversity loss during the past century. This has led to genetic homogenization and to the reduction of positive mechanisms such as the “portfolio effect”. In this study we propose the first comprehensive analysis of the genetic differences in Salmo salar and Salmo trutta populations in
