Subversion in sound arts - "In your DNA": sound arts and song

PART OF THE SOUND STUDIES LECTURE SERIES Cathy Lane Webinar 3 november 13:15-15:00 "This presentation is part of a wider research project into the ways in which contemporary sound artists are re-cycling existing material – real and imaginary - in this case song, in order to subvert the listeners’ habitual responses and highlight hitherto ignored, unnoticed or unknown elements attached to that song

Array based characterization of a terminal deletion involving chromosome subband 15q26.2: an emerging syndrome associated with growth retardation, cardiac defects and developmental delay.

BACKGROUND: Subtelomeric regions are gene rich and deletions in these chromosomal segments have been demonstrated to account for approximately 2.5% of patients displaying mental retardation with or without association of dysmorphic features. However, cases that report de novo terminal deletions on chromosome arm 15q are rare. METHODS: In this study we present the first example of a detailed molecu

Pursuing the objectives of support to providers and external accountability through enabling controls - A study of governance models in Swedish primary care.

BackgroundThe purpose of this study was to contribute to knowledge about what is regarded as an appropriate governance model in welfare markets in healthcare, from the perspective of government. The study draws on a framework about governance in healthcare systems as a continuous process of priority setting, monitoring and accountability. It relates to various dimensions of management controls; a

Diversity of soil microbial communities: In the perspective of targeting functional genes

Popular Abstract in English Soil as an ecosystem is a reservoir for several living organisms including microorganisms, earthworms, collembolans, nematodes and protozoans. They are involved in cycling the nutrients through degrading the organic compounds (source of carbon essential for all living organisms) like plant residues and respire part of it as carbon dioxide. Organic compounds get stored iAbstract Intensive land use in agriculture can lead to higher loss of biodiversity in soils and subsequently carbon due to tillage and application of pesticides and fertilizers. The microbial communities are pivotal to ecosystem processes in soil such as nutrient cycling, soil formation and plant productivity and thus are affected by land use. The main aim of this thesis is to understand the effe

Current Account Imbalances in the Eurozone: Is Institutional Heterogeneity to Blame?

Can differences in institutional quality explain current account imbalances in the Euro area? This paper emphasizes a link between current accounts and institutional quality based on a country study for Greece. Subsequently it tests the relationship for a homogeneous sample of 24 European countries over the period 1990 through 2013. Regression analysis indicates that institutional quality is cruci

Using gallium nitride nanowires as STM probes

A microscopy field known as Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM), uses various methods to get a picture of a sample surface down to such a small scale that individual atoms can be observed. One particular method to perform such microscopy uses the phenomena of quantum tunneling rather than using visible light. This method is called Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) and the way it works is extremely d

Male Experiences of Life After Recovery From an Eating Disorder

The aim of this study was to describe how former male patients perceive life after recovery from an eating disorder. A qualitative method with a phenomenographic approach was used to identify ways of experiencing recovery. Two descriptive categories were developed: body acceptance and self-worth. Six conceptions describe how recovered patients now relate in a balanced way to exercise and food, usi

Effect of feed on sub-surface deformation and yield strength of oxygen-free pitch copper in machining

The article deals with the influence of the machining induced surface integrity on tensile properties of 99.99% purity Oxygen-Free Pitch copper (OFC), used in nuclear and research facilities. The increase in the feed in machining was found to lead to an increase, up to 55%, in yield strength of the OFC specimens. Intensive sub-surface deformation and a high degree of work-hardening in the near-sur

Consequences of bushmeat hunting in tropical forests

Popular Abstract in English This thesis presents data from rainforests of southeastern Nigeria. Pairs of protected and hunted of study sites were established in three different but adjacent protected areas: 1. Mbe Mountain Community Forest (MMCF, total area 80 km2); 2. Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary (AMWS, total area 100 km2); and 3. Okwangwo division of the Cross River National Park (CRNP), totaThis thesis evaluates the effect of bushmeat hunting in southeastern Nigerian rainforests on: 1) adult tree, seedling, and animal community compositions 2) germination and survival among seedlings in association with competition 3) changes in community composition at multiple trophic levels 4) leaf nitrogen concentration (LNC), leaf mass per area (LMA) and stem specific density (SSD) 5) on human r

Cellular Uptake of Cystatin C. Subcellular localisation and intracellular effects of a secreted cysteine protease inhibitor

Popular Abstract in English The secreted cysteine protease inhibitor cystatin C has been thought to exert its functions extracellularly, as a defense against enzymes from leaking lysosomes or invading pathogens. In this thesis we demonstrate that regulation of intracellular proteases by cystatin C is possible, as a result of cellular uptake, and that the uptake can be modulated by molecular engineCystatin C is a cysteine protease inhibitor, aimed for secretion, as it is produced with a signal peptide. Its target enzymes are thought to be the lysosomal cysteine cathepsins and legumain. Cystatin C has been considered to excert its enzyme inhibiting functions extracellularly, as a defense against enzymes from leaking lysosomes or invading pathogens. It was demonstrated by various techniques,
