Evaluation of zinc status in subjects with Crohn's disease

Zinc status was evaluated in 30 subjects with Crohn's disease. Intestinal resection had previously been performed in 23 of the subjects. The concentrations of zinc were determined in plasma, erythrocytes, percutaneous muscle biopsies, and in urine collected during 24 hours. The results were compared with those in 19 healthy controls. Most of the patients had a normal zinc status. The levels of zin

Measuring Quality Gaps in TB Screening in South Africa Using Standardised Patient Analysis

This is the first multi-district Standardised Patient (SP) study in South Africa. It measures the quality of TB screening at primary healthcare (PHC) facilities. We hypothesise that TB screening protocols and best practices are poorly adhered to at the PHC level. The SP method allows researchers to observe how healthcare providers identify, test and advise presumptive TB patients, and whether thisThis is the first multi-district Standardised Patient (SP) study in South Africa. Drawing the Line Between Essential and Nonessential Interventions on Intersex Characteristics With European Health Care Professionals

Human rights statements on intersex characteristics distinguish legitimate “medically necessary” interventions from illegitimate normalizing ones. Ironically, this binary classification seems partially grounded in knowledge of anatomy and medical interventions; the very expertise that human rights statements challenge. Quarrying for Augustus: Gebel el-Silsila as a Source for Early Roman Monuments at Dendera

This paper presents a selection of epigraphic documents dispersed over three quarry faces (C11–C13) in the Main Quarry (Q34) at Gebel el-Silsila’s east bank, dating from the reign of the Emperor Augustus. The aim is to describe and decipher the various marks and depictions, and to translate the Demotic and Greek texts, in order to determine for what structure the stone from the quarry was intended

Developmental and Regenerative Neurobiology

Our research My group works with translational stem cell biology. The focus of my research is to understand cell fate specification in the developing brain and in human neural progenitor cells, using cell-based models of neuronal differentiation. Our current focus is to learn how to direct and efficiently drive controlled differentiation of human stem cells into subtype-specific neurons. We also d

Cultural and socio-political development in south Etruria. : The Biedano region in the 5th to 1st centuries BC

The town of Blera is situated in the southern parts of Etruria and has a history spanning more than 2,500 years. Its location between the two important Etruscan cities of Tarquinii and Caere has meant that Blera, for the entire Etruscan period (c. 750–50 BC), alternatively has found itself in either city’s sphere of interest. On Textile Reuse : Recycling and Resource Management in the Long Eighteenth Century

Reuse and recycling were important, but often forgotten, parts of managing the preindustrial fashionable wardrobe. Through researching diaries and extant garments from Swedish collections, the sources reveal everyday textile practices of costly textiles, mending, turning, altering, using old fabric or garments for new, change of parts or color, and reuse of textile material for new fabrics. Deglaciation history and subsequent lake dynamics in the Siljan region, south-central Sweden - LiDAR evidence and sediment records

The Siljan region hosts Europe´s largest impact structure. The high-relief landscape, with a central granite dome bordered by lake basins, contains an array of glacial and shore-level landforms. We investigated its deglaciation history by mapping and analysing landforms on high resolution LiDAR-based Digital Surface Models coupled with well-dated sediment successions from peat and lake sediment co

Phase transformation and stability studies of the Zr-H system

Popular Abstract in English Zirconium alloys are widely used in nuclear power reactors as cladding material for their fuels due to the high strength, good corrosion resistance and low neutron absorption cross-section, even in extreme environment, that is characteristic for zirconium. The element, however, also has strong affinity for hydrogen, and when both are present they readily react and form Zirconium alloys are widely used in the nuclear industry because of their high strength, good corrosion resistance and low neutron absorption cross-section. Zirconium has a strong affinity for hydrogen, however, and if hydrogen concentration builds up, the material will gradually degrade. In one class of such hydrogen caused degradation, called hydride induced embrittlement, hydrogen chemically re

Life Cycle Assessment of an Office Building Based on Site-Specific Data

Life cycle assessment (LCA) is an established method to assess the various environmental impacts associated with all the stages of a building. The goal of this project was to calculate the environmental releases for a whole office building and investigate the contribution in terms of environmental impact for different parts of the building, as well as the impact from different stages of the life c

Predicting Pro-environmental Behaviours with Locus of Control and Ecoanxiety

The climate crisis is not only affecting the physical world, but individuals’ mental health. The concept of ecoanxiety has reached major attention in the public discourse and more individuals report psychological consequences as a result of climate change. The call for action is urgent, but what are individuals doing to prevent further harm to the planet? Does the experience of ecoanxiety leave th

Value-at-Risk Estimation Under Shifting Volatility

Due to the Basel III regulations, Value-at-Risk (VaR) as a risk measure has become increasingly important in Europe for financial institutions. But even though it has become an important risk measure, both internally within company reporting and externally due to legislation, there is no one single way to forecast VaR that has yet proven to be superior. The aim of this paper is to examine differen
