OPTIMISATION AND PERFORMANCE QUANTIFICATION ACOUSTIC TRAPPING USING SYNTHETIC NANOPARTICLES

Acoustic trapping is becoming increasingly popular as a tool to isolate and enrich biological nanoparticles [1] (particularly extracellular vesicles [2]), yet an inherent problem with acoustic trapping of nanoparticles is calibration of the trapping efficiency. This abstract presents in-house synthesized nanoparticles with different sound scattering properties, either rigid high density gold nanop

DNA movement in sub-20 nm nanoslits

The movement of XbaI digested O-DNA in 20 nanometer and O-DNA in 12 nanometer high slits was investigated. We found that DNA moved intermittently and following preferential pathways, indicating an important influence of surface roughness. From these intermittent movements two different mobilities were calculated, the total averaged mobilities and averaged mobilities between the intermittent sticki

Transcriptomic profiling of T-cell populations in non-muscle invasive and muscle invasive bladder cancer.

Background: Bladder cancer is categorized as non-muscle invasive (NMIBC) or muscle invasive (MIBC). NIMBC makes up around 70% of the cases and although it is less aggressive, the recurrence rate is 50-70%, thus requiring extensive monitoring. Additionally, there is a risk of progression into MIBC with a 5-year survival of only 50% even when treated with radical cystectomy. Immune checkpoint inhibi

Entropy-based spatial heterogeneity analysis in pathological images for diagnostic applications

Clinical pathological diagnosis and prognosis for cancer is often confounded by spatial tissue heterogeneity. This study investigates the utility of entropy as a robust quantitative metric of spatial disorder within Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) chemical images of breast cancer tissue. The use of entropy is grounded in its capacity to encapsulate the complexities of pixel-wise spectral intensi

Using remote sensing to model carbon source/sink dynamics in the sahel

Recent research has identified the grasslands of the Sahel as a potential carbon sink, but regional carbon stock accounting in such biomes is undermined by the poorly recognized role they play in the carbon cycle as well as lack of data. In this paper, we demonstrate the feasibility of coupling the satellite data-driven light use efficiency model (Lund University Light Use Efficiency Model - LULUE

Interactive HPC and the LUNARC Desktop Environment

Since 2011, LUNARC has aimed to provide an interactive HPC environment for its resource users. Several different architectures have been used, but since 2013, we have been using a remote desktop environment based on Cendio's ThinLinc [1] combined with a custom backend framework, GfxLauncher [2], supporting hardware-accelerated graphics applications and Jupyter Notebooks [3] submitted to the backen

Physiological and behavioral responses in human fear of bears and wolves.

Research on human emotions towards large carnivores is often based on self-reported emotions. This study aimed to investigate physiological and behavioral responses to feared animals among people who say that they are fearful or not fearful of brown bear and wolf. Participants were recruited to be bear fearful only (n=8), fearful of both bear and wolves (n=15), or fearful of neither carnivore (n=1

Hazard Analysis of Collision Avoidance System using STPA

As our society becomes more and more dependent on IT systems, failures of these systems can harm more and more people and organizations both public and private. Diligently performing risk and hazard analysis helps to minimize the societal harms of IT system failures. In this paper we present experiences gained by applying the System Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA) method for hazard analysis on a

High-k oxides on InAs 100 and 111B surfaces

Al2O3 and HfO2 high-k oxides deposited by atomic layer deposition have been studied on InAs 100 and 111B surfaces. By using a low-frequency fitting routine, interface defect densities have been extracted. In general, both HfO2 and Al2O3 show similar D-it profiles, with a D-it minimum around 2x10(12) eV(-1)cm(-2).

STRATEGIES TO LEVERAGE BIOFUEL CROP CO-BENEFITS

Economies in Transition (EiTs) exemplified by countries such as Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova etc. face many socio-economic and environmental challenges – energy security, high unemployment, poor transportation and municipal service infrastructure, and rural depopulation are common themes. Agricultural biofuel production offers a number of socio-economic co-benefits that can contribute to the

A FrameNet-based semantic role labeler for Swedish

We present a FrameNet-based semantic role labeling system for Swedish text. As training data for the system, we used an annotated corpus that we produced by transferring FrameNet annotation from the English side to the Swedish side in a parallel corpus. In addition, we describe two frame element bracketing algorithms that are suitable when no robust constituent parsers are available. We evaluated

Psychiatric disorders and leukocyte telomere length: Underlying mechanisms linking mental illness with cellular aging.

Many psychiatric illnesses are associated with early mortality and with an increased risk of developing physical diseases that are more typically seen in the elderly. Moreover, certain psychiatric illnesses may be associated with accelerated cellular aging, evidenced by shortened leukocyte telomere length (LTL), which could underlie this association. Shortened LTL reflects a cell's mitotic history

Placidean teachings in early 19th century Britain : John Worsdale and Thomas Oxley

The paper examines the reception of and revisions made to the teachings of the Italian astrologer-monk Placido de Titi (1603 – 1668) in Protestant England following the decline of astrology during the 18th century, particularly as found in the writings of John Worsdale (1766 – c. 1826), whose role in the emergence of modern astrology is to a certain extent reappraised, and of his contemporary crit

Convergence Speed of Coupling Iterations for the Unsteady Transmission Problem

We present an estimate for the convergence rate of the Dirichlet-Neumann iteration for the discretized unsteady transmission problem. Specifically, we consider the coupling of two heat equations on two identical squared domains. The Laplacian is discretized by second order central finite differences and the implicit Euler method is used for the time discretization. For the semidiscrete case, Hensh
