What Happened to 'Race' in Race Biology? The Swedish State Institute for Race Biology, 1936-1960

The Swedish State Institute for Race Biology (SIRB) was founded in 1921 and immediately became the most important institution for racial science in Sweden. We know a great deal about the history of SIRB until 1935, when right-wing director Herman Lundborg retired and was replaced by the left-wing, anti-fascist Gunnar Dahlberg. In this essay, the later history of SIRB is for the first time examined

A part of social work and apart from social work: : hospital nurses in hospital discharges of older people in Sweden

The aim of this study was to reveal how hospital nurses handle the process when older people are considering relocation to a residential home after hospitalization. The focus is of special interest as, in Sweden, hospital nurses are employed by a county council without the authority to decide on local municipal care after hospital discharge. Ten nurses from three hospital wards participated in ope

Comparing baseline characteristics between groups : an introduction to the CBCgrps package

A usual practice in observational studies is the comparison of baseline characteristics of participants between study groups. The overall population can be grouped by clinical outcome or exposure status. A combined table reporting baseline characteristics is usually displayed, for the overall population and then separately for each group. The last column usually gives the P value for the compariso

How policy can strengthen (multi-employer) collective bargaining in Europe: Sweden

With the European minimum wage directive adopted in 2022, all European countries will be obliged to protect and promote collective bargaining. Where collective bargaining coverage is below 80 per cent, they will be obliged to draw up and implement national action plans in 2025 to increase coverage. This will be the first time in history for so many European countries to be legally obliged to thinkWith the European minimum wage directive adopted in 2022, all European countries will be obliged to protect and promote collective bargaining. Fracture incidence after tibial shaft fractures. A 30-year follow-up study

Based on all patients with tibial shaft fracture (n = 767) treated in the department of orthopedics in Malmö from 1955 to 1963, a retrospective cohort study was performed in 1990. Two hundred sixty-nine of the patients were still living in Malmö or had died in the city. Since all roentgenograms were available, all other fractures that this group of patients had sustained up to 1990 were included.

Allocation of ecological water rights considering ecological networks in arid watersheds : A framework and case study of Tarim River basin

A robust water supply system is significant to the local ecosystem of riparian vegetation in the arid basin. Considering the elasticity and relative importance of ecological water use in different regions of the basin, this study defines the ecological water rights on a multi-year scale, divides the priority of those rights based on the ecological network, and proposes a rights allocation method.

Dynamic analysis of forces in the lumbar spine during bag carrying

Objective. The intervertebral disc supports axial and shear forces generated during tasks such as lifting and carrying weights. The objective of this study was to determine the forces in the lumbar spine of workers carrying a bag on the head, on the shoulder and on the anterior part of the trunk. Methods. Kinematic measurements were recorded for 10 subjects carrying bags of 10, 20 and 25 kg on eac

Unilateral exceptions to international law : Systematic legal analysis and critique of doctrines that seek to deny or reduce the applicability of human rights norms in the fight against terrorism

It is well known that many governments have resorted to a wide range of constructions to justify, underi nternational law, their unilateral exceptions to human rights in the name of countering terrorism. This paper seeks to take stock of a range of arguments, doctrines or constructionsth at states may resort to when seeking to justify their unilateral exceptions to human rights norms in the fight

Economic sanctions and domestic diversion

The existing sanctions-impact literature has documented diversion effects favouring third countries for both merchandise trade and investment, but it has not considered sanctions diverting trade towards the domestic economy in sender and target countries. We contribute by using the Global Sanctions Database (Felbermayr et al. 2020a,b) in a structural gravity framework to provide evidence for domes

Women's sexual and reproductive health in war and conflict : are we seeing the full picture?

It is well established that women's sexual and reproductive health (SRHR) is negatively affected by war. While global health research often emphasises infrastructure and systematic factors as key impediments to women's SRHR in war and postwar contexts, reports from different armed conflicts indicate that women's reproduction may be controlled both by state and other armed actors, limiting women's

The emotional well-being of parents with children at genetic risk for type 1 diabetes before and during participation in the POInT-study

Introduction: This study examined the emotional impact that parents experience when confronted with an increased genetic risk of type 1 diabetes (T1D) in their child. Population-based screening of neonates for genetic risk of chronic disease carries the risk of increased emotional burden for parents. Methods: Information was collected using a well-being questionnaire for parents of infants identif

Changing land cover as a driver of surface water browning

Streams, rivers and lakes across wide areas of the Northern hemisphere have been subject to an increase in water color over the last decades. This increase, also known as browning, is a result of rising dissolved organic matter (DOM) and iron (Fe) concentrations in the water. Over the years, browning has received ample attention due to its impact on the structure and function of freshwater ecosyst

Cystatin C is Indispensable for Evaluation of Kidney Disease

The present minireview of the place of cystatin C in clinical medicine emphasizes, and discuss the evidence, that cystatin C-based GFR-estimating equations do not require the use of vague terms like race and sex, that cystatin C-based GFR-esti mating equations are useful for both children and adults, including the elderly, that the best GFR-estimation requires simultaneous use of both cystatin C-

A search for the decays of stopped long-lived particles at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for long-lived particles, which have come to rest within the ATLAS detector, is presented. The subsequent decays of these particles can produce high-momentum jets, resulting in large out-of-time energy deposits in the ATLAS calorimeters. These de- cays are detected using data collected during periods in the LHC bunch structure when collisions are absent. The analysed dataset is composed o

Packaging solutions to reduce discolouration in spices due to light exposure

Study of 5 spice varieties with different Packaging Materials and Light Sources. Santa Maria Co. has encountered issues in their spices assortment; light causes color bleaching in some spices due to light exposure. This phenomenon often happens when the spices are displayed in the retailer’s facilities and after the products leave the manufacturing facilities, meaning the Company has no longer th

Video Conferencing - Session and Transmission Control

Video conferencing is a very bandwidth sensitive application, if the available bandwidth is to low to handle the send rate of the media, packages will be lost in the network and thus the conference will be disrupted. Axis Communications would like to know which techniques are used today to ensure optimized bandwidth usage and as good quality as possible during a video conference even if the networ

Syftet är att se hur gällande rätThe Swedish law of succession includes a right for the direct heir to retain a part of the heritage if the deceased have drawn a will. Upprätthållandet av den könssegregerade arbetsmarknaden. Könsidentitetshots påverkan på gymnasieelevers yrkesrelaterade preferenser.

The labor market and work related attributes are gender segregated. The current experimental research investigates to what extent threat to gender identity affects adolescents’ job attribute preferences. Swedish high school students (N = 263; 50 % girls) were exposed to either a threat to the distinctiveness of their gender group or to no threat at all and then rated their in-terest in gender ster
