The Moral Landscape of Prenatal Diagnosis

This chapter deals with the Swedish regulation of prenatal diagnosis and the various arguments posed for or against such regulation, including whether there should be any changes in the legislation of late-term abortions. Using the metaphor ‘moral landscape,’ it explores how actors such as physicians, disability organizations, and women’s organizations negotiated their position on an issue that wa

A single formant explicates the ubiquity of “meow”

Across languages, the species–typical vocalization by domes-tic cats (Felis catus silvestris) is transcribed similarly, typicallycorresponding to [miau:] or [waU:]. Such consistent and ubiqui-tous cross-linguistic transcription is apparently onomatopoetic. However, in humans, these qualities make unique use of thetongue; in comparison, most nonhuman mammals do not ap-pear to employ their tongues wh

Cold War Conduct : Knowledge Transfer, Psychological Defence, and Media Preparedness in Denmark Between Sweden, Norway, and NATO, 1954–1967

Employing the Foucauldian term ‘conduct’, this article explores how social resilience and morale became a target of state intervention in Denmark during the Cold War. ‘Psychological defence’ was a Cold War phenomenon designed to bring an imagined future war into a space of control as well as a tool for the authorities’ exercise of power in case another world war became a reality. Advocating a meth

The will to activate library users and the making of citizens : How different rationalities influence the notion of participation in a library context

This article explores how the notion of participation informs policy documents in a public library context. Library users are expected to manage on their own, to a large extent, as society calls for self-governing, active subjects who are willing to participate. To explore this notion of participation, we utilize the concept of problematization and analyze policy documents regarding the public lib

Local Governance of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Air Travel

Global greenhouse gas emissions from air travel (GHG-A) are on the rise, and projections point towards a rapid growth in the coming decades. This study aims to examine how local government (cities), addresses GHG-A in their Sustainable Energy Action Plans (SEAP). To fulfil this aim, over 200 SEAPs were analysed focusing on three issues: (1) Treatment of GHG-A in local emissions inventories; (2) PoGlobal greenhouse gas emissions from air travel (GHG-A) are on the rise, and projections point towards a rapid growth in the coming decades. Islamophobia, Representation and the Muslim Political Subject : A Swedish Case Study

Applying media analysis, this article addresses how the exclusion of Muslim women from fields of common public interest in Sweden, such as partaking as an active citizen, is materialized. Focusing on a specific event—the cancellation of a screening of Burka Songs 2.0—and the media coverage and representation of the cancellation, it discusses the role of discourses of gender equality, secularity anApplying media analysis, this article addresses how the exclusion of Muslim women from fields of common public interest in Sweden, such as partaking as an active citizen, is materialized. Uncertainty of Inflationary Perceptions and Expectations

This article reports the result of a survey designed to investigate the degree of uncertainty by which a representative sample of Swedish households hold their perceptions and expectations of inflation. The public displays hardly any uncertainty concerning the direction of change of the price level as measured by the ratio of ‘don’t know’ answers. However, when asked for numerical estimates of the

Gaussian integrals and Rice series in crossing distributions : to compute the distribution of maxima and other features of Gaussian processes

We describe and compare how methods based on the classical Rice’s formula for the expected number, and higher moments, of level crossings by a Gaussian process stand up to contemporary numerical methods to accurately deal with crossing related characteristics of the sample paths. We illustrate the relative merits in accuracy and computing time of the Rice moment methods and the exact numerical meth

On the Design of Electric Traction Machines : Design and Analysis of an Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine for Heavy Commercial Vehicles

Recent years have proven the benefits of electrifying the road bound vehicle fleet. With new components entering, the general understanding as well as the components as such needs to be improved. Focus in the thesis is on the design of an electric machine based on specifications of requirements for a commercial heavy vehicle such as a truck or a bus. One strict requirement is that the machine has

Ut ur pandemin – rakt in i den digitala transformationen.

Energy Communities: a transition towards a more just energy system?

We use energy in almost every aspect of our lives. Yet, often, we do not know the source of electricity that powers our homes or heats our food. In this episode, we explore energy communities as a form of decentralised and democratic energy production. Community energy sees people coming together to take control of their energy needs, by finding alternative ways to organise and govern the energy sWe use energy in almost every aspect of our lives. Return to work still possible after several years as a disability pensioner due to musculoskeletal disorders : A population-based study after a new legislation in Sweden permitting “Resting disability pension”

Different strategies have been used to stimulate a return to work (RTW) among individuals suffering from long-term ailments. In Sweden a new law on "resting disability pension" permits disability pensioners to go back to work without jeopardising their benefits. In this study different variables related to RTW during 2000 by means of this legislation were identified among disability pensioners witDifferent strategies have been used to stimulate a return to work (RTW) among individuals suffering from long-term ailments. Svenska skalbaggar 1. En blev två - några artsplittar bland svenska skalbaggar

Recent studies of beetle specimens deposited in collections have revealed five species new to the Swedish fauna to be hiding amongst their closely related species. In some cases, the species known to the Swedish fauna are widespread and considered common, making it easy to overlook the slight differences that separate them from the similar and less common species. Some of these species are restric

Voices of Supporters : Populist parties, social media and the 2019 European elections

This book addresses an under-researched area within populism studies: the discourse of supporters of populist parties. Taking the 2019 European elections as their case study, the authors analyse how supporters in eleven different countries construct identities and voting motivations on social media. Tools for the Advancement of Radiopharmaceutical Therapy

Radiopharmaceutical therapy is used to treat cancers and other diseases with radiolabeledpharmaceuticals. The treatment targets specific cells, and the emitted ionizing radiation cause cytotoxicdamage. Dosimetry is performed to estimate the absorbed dose from the energy deposited in the body. This requires measurement of the activity in vivo and knowledge of the retention time of the activity in tuRadiopharmaceutical therapy is used to treat cancers and other diseases with radiolabeled pharmaceuticals. Conclusion: A Research and Policy Agenda for Addressing Displacement in the Context of Disasters and Climate Change

This chapter suggests ways forward in both policy and research. It establishes that legal and policy frameworks have little value without implementation, and multiple factors beyond these frameworks affect the extent to which people are protected from and during displacement and whether durable solutions to displacement are ultimately realised. Internationally, UN agencies, treaty monitoring bodie

Bogong Moths Are Well Camouflaged by Effectively Decolourized Wing Scales

Moth wings are densely covered by wing scales that are assumed to specifically function to camouflage nocturnally active species during day time. Generally, moth wing scales are built according to the basic lepidopteran Bauplan, where the upper lamina consists of an array of parallel ridges and the lower lamina is a thin plane. The lower lamina hence acts as a thin film reflector having distinct rMoth wings are densely covered by wing scales that are assumed to specifically function to camouflage nocturnally active species during day time.
