A Common Counter-Terrorism Strategy in the European Union? How Member States’ Ideas, Norms and Identities Matter

This thesis investigates the prospects of a common counter-terrorism strategy in the European Union. It analyzes how Member States’ security cultures influence the establishment of a common European counter-terrorism strategy. The study examines the differences between Member States’ security cultures under the framework of social constructivism that emphasizes the impact of the socially construct

Democratic Transition in the Democratic Republic of Congo After The Cold War

This thesis has investigated the prevailing understanding of poor leadership as a major impediment to the democratization of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Analytical studies found evidences on the correlation between the authoritarian regimes installed in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the abortive process of democratization under the leadership of Mobutu Sese Seko and Laurent-Désiré Kab

Essays on Social Norms and Economic Change

This dissertation consists of three empirical essays concerning social norms and their effect on economic outcomes. Each essays discusses a seperate subject. The first paper, Breaking the Glass Ceiling: Gender Norms and Women Executives in the United States studies social norms as a distal cause of differences between genders in corporate executive recruitment strategies. Jihadi Kitsch: The Promesse de Bonheur of Islamist Terrorism

Elaborating on conceptualizations of kitsch in the realm of art and sociology in the context of ISIS propaganda and culture, this article introduces the concept of jihadi kitsch. Kitsch is characterized by a compulsion to escape from the banality of daily reality and lack of coherent meaning in modern society through, in the words of the philosopher and sociologist Theodor Adorno, a self-made and

Strain Rate Effects on Tensile and Compression Behavior of Nano-crystalline Nanoporous Gold: A Molecular Dynamic Study

In this study the strain rate effects on the tensile and compressive properties of nano-crystalline nanoporous gold (nc-NPAu) are investigated by performing molecular dynamics simulations. In order to examine the role of strain rate, atomistic models of nc-NPAu structures with three different grain size are generated through a novel modeling technique based on the Voronoi tessellation method. Local Governance of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Air Travel

Global greenhouse gas emissions from air travel (GHG-A) are on the rise, and projections point towards a rapid growth in the coming decades. This study aims to examine how local government (cities), addresses GHG-A in their Sustainable Energy Action Plans (SEAP). To fulfil this aim, over 200 SEAPs were analysed focusing on three issues: (1) Treatment of GHG-A in local emissions inventories; (2) PoGlobal greenhouse gas emissions from air travel (GHG-A) are on the rise, and projections point towards a rapid growth in the coming decades. Academic developers developing : aspects of an expanding lifeworld

This text discusses the professional development of academic developers. It is based on the authors’ reflections and observations in the context of a semi-formal programme, Strategic Academic Development, held for academic developers in different regions of the world. Most recently the programme participants were academic developers in Singapore. In this text, we as authors share what we notice as

“The Swedish Sonderweg in Question: Democratization and Inequality in Comparative Perspective, c. 1750–1920”

During the twentieth century, Sweden became known as a country with an unusually egalitarian distribution of income and wealth, an encompassing welfare state, and an exceptionally strong social democracy. It is commonplace among historians and social scientists to consider these equal outcomes of the twentieth century as the logical end result of a much longer historical trajectory of egalitariani

Hard and soft materials: putting consistent van der Waals density functionals to work

We present the idea and illustrate potential benefits of having a tool chain of closely related regular, unscreened and screened hybrid exchange–correlation (XC) functionals, all within the consistent formulation of the van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF) method (Hyldgaard et al (2020 J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 32 393001)). Use of this chain of nonempirical XC functionals allows us to map wheWe present the idea and illustrate potential benefits of having a tool chain of closely related regular, unscreened and screened hybrid exchange–correlation (XC) functionals, all within the consistent formulation of the van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF) method (Hyldgaard et al (2020 J. Hög diabetesrisk bland icke-västerländska invandrare : Riktad och strukturerad prevention behövs

Political instability the last decades has forced millions of people to migrate from their homelands. In Sweden today, 1.6 million are born abroad, of which the largest immigrant groups originate from the Middle East. Immigrants from these areas represent high risk populations for type 2 diabetes with prevalence of type 2 diabetes twice as high compared to the native Swedish population. Impact of the morphological and chemical properties of copper-zirconium-SBA-15 catalysts on the conversion and selectivity in carbon dioxide hydrogenation

A hybrid catalyst consisting of Zr-doped mesoporous silica (Zr-SBA-15) supports with intergrown Cu nanoparticles was used to study the effects of a catalyst’s chemical states on CO2 hydrogenation. The chemical state of the catalyst was altered by using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) or sodium metasilicate (SMS) as the silica precursor in the synthesis of the Zr-SBA-15 framework, and infiltration A hybrid catalyst consisting of Zr-doped mesoporous silica (Zr-SBA-15) supports with intergrown Cu nanoparticles was used to study the effects of a catalyst’s chemical states on CO2 hydrogenation. Challenges and the Way Forward in a Difficult Development Landscape: Achieving a Sustainable Future in Africa and Its Sahel Region

This handbook brings together a collection of seminal research on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and investigates the effectiveness of the 17 goals for achieving transformative change toward sustainable development. As a collection of inter- and transdisciplinary research from around the world, this volume explores the applications, implications, and best practices of the goals at thematiWhen the world committed to end poverty and hunger as part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the promise to “leave no one behind” was recognized as both an ethical responsibility and a key criteria for success. How can we make sure that such a promise becomes a reality, and what challenges lie ahead? This chapter aims to address these issues by focusing on parts of the world that, despi

Ungulate niche partitioning and behavioural plasticity of aurochs in Early Holocene southern Scandinavia revealed by stable isotope analysis of bone collagen

This study examines the impact of the extensive climatic and environmental changes associated with the Early Holocene on the feeding ecology of aurochs, European bison, red deer, and Eurasian elk in southern Scandinavia from radiocarbon dates and analysis of stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes. Molecular sex information is utilised in the study of aurochs to understand the underlying reasons behin

Musical festival floats of Japan : Festival ensembles in the Chita Peninsula and Aichi

This book aims to increase the understanding of festival music in Japan. It is based on more than thirty years of fieldwork. Close study of one local festival in the town of Taketoyo is combined with a wider comparative analysis that covers most of the of the Aichi prefecture in central Japan. All these festivals are float-festivals. Charged with spiritual power, the floats serve as mobile shrines

From Paper Patterns to Patterns-on-Fabric : Home Sewing in Sweden 1881–1981

From the end of the nineteenth century and one hundred years onward, home sewing was an important part of many women’s duties, but it was also a pleasure, something that existed parallel with the emerging mass-produced ready-to-wear industry. The paper patterns used for home dressmaking were often sold and distributed through women’s magazines.
