Mimicking the navigation of the insect brain

This article is over 5 years old, and the information may therefore be outdated. How do bees always find their way home, not to mention in a straight line? What is it about the insect brain that allows them to navigate so easily? Could we copy that function? A step in this direction has now been taken by a group of scientists in a project combining the fields of biology, physics, nanoscience and i

Light helps develop programmable materials

This article is over 5 years old, and the information may therefore be outdated. Light of a certain wavelength can be used to put so-called active materials into motion and control their movement. In the future, this discovery can become significant in widely different areas such as environmental protection, medicine and the development of new materials which can be programmed.

The starry sky shows nocturnal animals the way

This article is over 5 years old, and the information may therefore be outdated. Nocturnal animals can use the stars and the Milky Way to find their way during the darkest hours. While animal navigation is studied all over the world, some of the leading researchers are based at Lund University in Sweden. In a recent article they sum up the research so far and give their thoughts on challenges to c

Reconfigurable transistors important in future semiconductors

Reconfigurable transistors are key elements in the development of future semiconductors. As conventional transistors approach the limit of how small they can become, more functions in the same number of units will become increasingly important in developing small and energy-efficient circuits for better memories and more powerful computers. In two articles published in Science Advances and Nature

Bakteriofager – o

Inexpensive spectrometer triggers chemistry students’ curiosity

A team of NanoLund researchers sought ways to make students understand what is actually happening inside the “magic black box” of a commercial spectrophotometer.  “This set promotes discovery in a natural and self-motivating way. By changing samples in the spectrometer, we can explore a variety of materials and their properties,” says NanoLundian Jens Uhlig, one of the researchers behind the work.
