Förmaksflimmer är en vanlig och behandlingskrävande hjärtrytmrubbning. Det kroniska förmaksflimret finner man i befolkningen från 50-årsåldern i alltmer ökande omfattning. Antalet individer i Norge med denna rytmrubbning beräknas vara drygt 40000 och ökar med ytterligare cirka 5000 till år 2010.
