Combined effect of low-penetrant SNPs on breast cancer risk.

Background:Although many low-penetrant genetic risk factors for breast cancer have been discovered, knowledge about the effect of multiple risk alleles is limited, especially in women <50 years. We therefore investigated the association between multiple risk alleles and breast cancer risk as well as individual effects according to age-approximated pre- and post-menopausal status. Methods:Ten previo

T-bet-expressing Tr1 cells driven by dietary signals dominate the small intestinal immune landscape

Intestinal immunity defends against enteric pathogens, mediates symbiotic relationships with the resident microbiota, and provides tolerance to food antigens, safeguarding critical nutrient absorption and barrier functions of this mucosal tissue. Despite the abundance of tissue resident activated T cells, their contributions to these various roles remain poorly understood. Here, we identify a domi

Liposarcoma: a population-based epidemiologic and prognostic study of features of 43 patients, including tumor DNA content

Different conceptions exist regarding the epidemiology and prognosis of liposarcoma, and several classification systems are in use. We analyzed a population-based, 25-year series of 43 patients with liposarcoma of the extremity or trunk wall. Follow-up was complete. The annual incidence was 0.12/10(5). The thigh was the most common location. One of 6 tumors was subcutaneous. Deep-seated tumors wer

Kinetics and Mechanism for the Redox Reaction between Hexaaquathallium(III) and Sulfur Dioxide in Acidic Aqueous Solution

Oxidation of dissolved sulfur dioxide, SO2·nH2O, HSO3– and SO32–, by hexaaquathallium(III) has been studied in acidic aqueous solution with ionic strength 1.0 mol dm–3 at 25 °C. The stoichiometry of the reaction has been determined: [Tl(H2O)6]3++ SO2(aq)+ 2H2O →[Tl(H2O)6]++ HSO4–+ 3H+. The kinetics has been studied by use of stopped-flow spectrophotometry under pseudo-first-order conditions with eOxidation of dissolved sulfur dioxide, SO2·nH2O, HSO3– and SO32–, by hexaaquathallium(III) has been studied in acidic aqueous solution with ionic strength 1.0 mol dm–3 at 25 °C. An insight into molecular motions and phase composition of gliadin/glutenin glycerol blends studied by 13C solid-state and 1H time-domain NMR

Monitoring of the molecular motions and secondary structures of gliadin (Gli) and glutenin (Glu) in blends with 10, 20, 30, and 40% glycerol was performed by solid-state (SS) and time domain (TD) NMR spectroscopy. Increasing the glycerol content increased the relative amount of β-sheets and disordered structures, while decreasing α-helices in Gli/Glu–glycerol blends studied by 13C CPMAS NMR. For ≥

Endovascular Repair of 100 Urgent and Emergent Free or Contained Thoracoabdominal Aortic Aneurysms Ruptures. An International Multicenter Trans-Atlantic Experience

Objective: To analyze the outcomes of urgent/emergent endovascular aortic repair of patients with free/contained ruptured thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (rTAAA). Background: Endovascular repair of rTAAA has been scarcely described in emergent setting. Methods: An international multicenter retrospective observational study (ClinicalTrials.govID:NCT05956873) from January 2015 to January 2023 in 6

Ultrafast Terahertz Photoconductivity of Bulk Heterojunction Materials Reveals High Carrier Mobility up to Nanosecond Time Scale.

The few-picosecond (ps) decay of terahertz (THz) photoconductivity typically observed for conjugated polymer:fullerene blends (at excitation fluencies ∼10(15) photons/cm(2) per pulse) is shown to be a result of charge pair annihilation for two polymer:PCBM blends. At a factor of 100 lower excitation density, the THz decay is in the hundreds of ps time scale, implying that very high carrier mobilit

Educational inequalities in all-cause and cause-specific mortality among people with gout : a register-based matched cohort study in southern Sweden

BACKGROUND: Gout is the most common inflammatory arthritis with a rising prevalence around the globe. While educational inequalities in incidence and prevalence of gout have been reported, no previous study investigated educational inequality in mortality among people with gout. The aim of this study was to assess absolute and relative educational inequalities in all-cause and cause-specific morta

This case report describes a 66-year old woman with Parkinson´s disease and a subacute onset lateral postural deformity. She experienced severe back pain and reduced walking ability. She was diagnosed with Pisa syndrome and sagittal and coronal imbalance was observed on radiographs. Posterior reconstructive surgery was performed from sacrum to Th10. Post operatively, sagittal and coronal imbalance

Blockade of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore diminishes infarct size in the rat after transient middle cerebral artery occlusion

The mitochondrial permeability transition pore is an inducer of cell death. During the reperfusion phase after cerebral ischemia, calcium accumulates in mitochondria, and a burst of free radical formation occurs, conditions that favor the activation of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore. Here the authors demonstrate that a blocker of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore, the

Effect of dextran-70 on outcome in severe sepsis; A propensity-score matching study

Background: Albumin may be beneficial in patients with septic shock but availability is limited and cost is high. The objective of the present study was to investigate if the use of dextran-70 in addition to albumin and crystalloids influences organ failure or mortality in patients with severe sepsis or septic shock. Methods: Patients with severe sepsis or septic shock (n = 778) admitted to a univ

Prediction of clinical progression after radical prostatectomy in a nationwide population-based cohort

Objective: The aim of this study was to create a model for predicting progression-free survival after radical prostatectomy for localized prostate cancer. Material and methods: The risk of biochemical recurrence (BCR) was modelled in a cohort of 3452 men aged 70 years or younger who were primarily treated with radical prostatectomy after being diagnosed between 2003 and 2006 with localized prostat

The use of chordotomy to treat pain from gynecologic cancer

Tumor growth in the pelvis with nerve involvement causes severe pain which is notoriously resistant to pharmacological treatment. Chordotomy is a classical method for the relief of pain. This is a retrospective study of 24 chordotomy cases, operated on at the department of Neurosurgery, and independently evaluated at the department of Gynecologic Oncology. Initially 19 patients (79%) were painfree
