Autoionization following nanoplasma formation in atomic and molecular clusters

Abstract: Nanoplasmas resulting from the ionization of nano-scale particles by intense laser pulses are typically described by quasiclassical models, where electron emission is understood to take place via thermal processes. Recently, we discovered that, following the interaction of intense near-infrared (NIR) laser pulses with molecular oxygen clusters, electron emission from nanoplasmas can also

Where Forest Carbon Meets Its Maker: Forestry-Based Offsetting as the Subsumption of Nature

The “subsumption of nature” framework focuses on productivity increases and extractive innovations in nature-based industries. In this article, we argue that it can also be employed beyond that context in order to capture the convoluted dynamics of market environmentalism. To substantiate our argument, we draw on recent fieldwork on “Trees for Global Benefits,” a forestry-based offsetting project

CT is unreliable in locoregional staging of early colon cancer : A nationwide registry-based study

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The option to treat early colon cancer (CC) with local resection, as well as trials investigating neoadjuvant treatment, has increased the importance of identifying early-stage disease in the workup. Most CC patients are T- and N-staged preoperatively with CT, although its reliability in staging early CC remains elusive. The aim of this study was to investigate CT-staging

How general is the effect of the bulkiness of organic ligands on the basicity of metal-organic catalysts? H2-evolving Mo oxides/sulphides as case studies

Tailoring the activity of an organometallic catalyst usually requires a targeted ligand design. Tuning the ligand bulkiness and tuning the electronic properties are popular approaches, which are somehow interdependent because substituents of different sizes within ligands can determine inter alia the occurrence of different degrees of inductive effects. Ligand basicity, in particular, turned o

Cerebrospinal Fluid Biomarkers of Synaptic Dysfunction Are Altered in Parkinson's Disease and Related Disorders

Background: Synaptic dysfunction and degeneration are central contributors to the pathogenesis and progression of parkinsonian disorders. Therefore, identification and validation of biomarkers reflecting pathological synaptic alterations are greatly needed and could be used in prognostic assessment and to monitor treatment effects. Objective: To explore candidate biomarkers of synaptic dysfunction

A male bovine linkage map for the ADR granddaughter design

The aim of this paper is to present the construction of a male genetic linkage map as a result of the bovine genome mapping project, which is a common effort of the German cattle breeding federation (ADR), four animal breeding institutes, three blood group laboratories and two animal data and breeding value evaluation centres. In total 20 grandsires with 1074 sires were provided from the German ca

Exploring and comparing definitions of healthy vascular ageing in the population : characteristics and prospective cardiovascular risk

Different methods can be used to define healthy vascular ageing (HVA). In this prospective cohort study, we explored three different definitions in order to provide guidance for which to use. 2718 subjects were included from the Cardiovascular (CV) arm of the Malmö Diet Cancer Study (MDCS; median age 71.9 years, 62.2% females). Three different definitions of HVA were used: HVA-1 (<15th percentile

Plasma protein N-glycome composition associates with postprandial lipaemic response

Background: A dysregulated postprandial metabolic response is a risk factor for chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The plasma protein N-glycome is implicated in both lipid metabolism and T2DM risk. Hence, we first investigate the relationship between the N-glycome and postprandial metabolism and then explore the mediatory role of the plasma N-glycome in the relationship b

Coalition agreements and governments’ policy-making productivity

One of the biggest challenges parties in multiparty governments face is making policies together and overcoming the risk of a policy stalemate. Scholars have devoted much attention to the study of how various institutions in cabinet and parliament help coalition parties with conflicting policy preferences to be efficient in the policy-making process. Coalition agreements are one of many instrument

Galectin-4 is associated with diabetes and obesity in a heart failure population

An association between high Galectin-4 (Gal-4) and prevalence of diabetes in subjects with heart failure (HF) has previously been reported. The purpose of this study was to confirm these findings, as well as to further investigate this association, in a Swedish HF population. In addition, a second aim was to explore Gal-4’s association with obesity and biomarkers of metabolism and heart failure. G

A field test of computer-vision-based gaze estimation in psychology

Computer-vision-based gaze estimation refers to techniques that estimate gaze direction directly from video recordings of the eyes or face without the need for an eye tracker. Although many such methods exist, their validation is often found in the technical literature (e.g., computer science conference papers). We aimed to (1) identify which computer-vision-based gaze estimation methods are usabl

Micro-cavity optimization for single ion fluorescence detection

This thesis describes the work done on two open access microcavities that aims at detecting single rare-earth ions for quantum information applications. The initial microcavity faced mechanical instability due to its geometry, which limited robust design possibilities due to the 25 mm diameter space of the helium bath cryostat. A Purcell enhancement of 2.2 was realized for nanoparticles at 2.1 K,

An improved high-performance liquid chromatography process for the large-scale production of paclitaxel

The purification of crude (60.89% pure) paclitaxel was developed for high purity and yield. Several solvent systems, including methanol (MeOH), acetone, tetrahydrofurane, n-hexane, and water, were evaluated for precipitation efficiency. The best results were obtained using a mixture of MeOH and water, which was very effective at removing polar impurities, yielding a precipitate with 90.87% purity.

Experimental investigation of the response of an a-Si EPID to an unflattened photon beam from an Elekta Precise linear accelerator

The characteristics of an Elekta amorphous silicon (a-Si) electronic portal imaging device (EPID) in response to a 6 MV photon beam generated without a flattening filter, an unflattened beam, have been determined. The characteristics were then compared to those for a conventional photon beam generated with a flattening filter in the beam, a flattened beam, in order to determine the suitability of

All-cause mortality and death by aortic dissection in women with Turner syndrome : A national clinical cohort study

Background: Turner syndrome (TS) is a complex genetic disorder with raised mortality. Our objective was to investigate mortality and causes of death in TS. Methods: A matched retrospective observational study of women with TS recruited from the Turner centers in Sweden were conducted. A total of 472 women with TS, ≥16 years old with a cytogenetically verified diagnosis and 2357 controls, matched f

Burden of Morbidity after Allogeneic Blood or Marrow Transplantation for Inborn Errors of Metabolism : A BMT Survivor Study Report

Survival after blood or marrow transplantation (BMT) for inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) is excellent; however, the burden of morbidity in long-term survivors of BMT for IEM remains understudied. This study examined the risk of chronic health conditions (CHC) in ≥2-year survivors of allogeneic BMT for IEM performed between 1974 and 2014 using the BMT Survivor Study. In this retrospective cohort

Beam control system and output fine-tuning for safe and precise delivery of FLASH radiotherapy at a clinical linear accelerator

Introduction: We have previously adapted a clinical linear accelerator (Elekta Precise, Elekta AB) for ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) electron delivery. To enhance reliability in future clinical FLASH radiotherapy trials, the aim of this study was to introduce and evaluate an upgraded beam control system and beam tuning process for safe and precise UHDR delivery. Materials and Methods: The beam contr

Long-term Mortality and Hospital Readmissions Among Survivors of Sepsis in Sweden : A Population-Based Cohort Study
