This course focuses on theoretical and practical issues connected to archaeological fieldwork. Modern archaeology requires knowledge and awareness of a wide range of scholarly fields, both in relation to the archaeological field practice and concerning the role of archaeology in society. In this course the students take part in archaeological excavations, carry out archaeological documentation of buildings, and learn how to plan and perform landscape analysis. The students will also gain insights into the various methods of analysis in modern archaeology. Topics like GIS (geographical information systems), contextual documentation, and the compilation and interpretation of large amounts of archaeological data are studied. Finally the students will get the opportunity to reflect upon their professional roles, the role of archaeology in society and thereby connected topics of ethics, outreach and the use of history. Throughout all parts of the course an emphasis is made on the theoretical foundation of all archaeological practice.

Students must have completed course ARKK04 Archaeology level 3 (30 ECTS), ARKH04 Historical Archaeology level 3 (30 ECTS), AKSK04 Classical Archaeology and Ancient History level 3 (30 ECTS), HOSK04 Historical Osteology level 3 (30 ECTS), or the equivalent. English course 6/B (advanced proficiency)
