Reduced immune responsiveness contributes to winter energy conservation in an Arctic bird

Animals in seasonal environments must prudently manage energyexpenditure to survive the winter. This may be achieved throughreductions in the allocation of energy for various purposes (e.g.thermoregulation, locomotion, etc.). We studied whether such tradeoffsalso include suppression of the innate immune response, bysubjecting captive male Svalbard ptarmigan (Lagopus mutahyperborea) to bacterial li

Removal of Lysozyme from Methylated Silica Surfaces by a Nonionic Surfactant Pentaethyleneglycol Mono n-Dodecyl Ether (C12E5)

The removal of lysozyme adsorbed to a hydrophobic surface by a non-ionic surfactant, C12E5, was investigated using in situ ellipsometry. Both the adsorption and removal of protein were studied at different protein and surfactant concentrations. The surfaces used were methylated silica surfaces and the experiments were carried out at pH 5.6 in 0.01 M NaCl solution. As far below as you can come? : Historical archaeology on vulnerability and marginalization of life at the bottom of the social ladder

The Swedish well fare state is a young phenomenon. In the 19th and early 20th centuries there were numerous non proprietor, poor and pauper people in the Swedish countryside such as crofters, boarders and inhabitants of rural slums. Being poor also meant being more exposed to risks than more resourceful persons, and having fragile safety nets. This paper is about these poor and pauper persons of tIn the 19th and early 20th centuries there were numerous non-proprietors and paupers in the Swedish countryside, such as crofters, boarders and inhabitants of rural slums. Multisource methods such as triangulation of written documents, historical maps and archaeological evidence are used to study the living conditions, vulnerability and marginalization of boarders and inhabitants of rural slums fr

Attractive Patchy Protein Interactions : Understanding of protein dimerization

Protein interactions are important in understanding various protein relevant cellular and technological processes. This is a challenging task due to the intrinsically irregular shape and inhomogeneous surface distribution of neutral, charged, hydrophobic amino acid residues. This results inmore or less anisotropic interactions depending on external parameters such assalt and pH. Structure, Dynamics and Phase Behaviour of Charged Soft Colloidal Dispersions

Med den ökade förståelsen för många komplexa fysikaliska fenomen och den snabbt växande utvecklingen av nya material behövs modellsysteSoft and deformable ionic microgels such as poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid), PNIPAM-co-AA, microgels have shown to be a versatile alternative to the already well-established hard sphere model systems. Their tuneable interaction potential makes them well suited as model systems to study the phase behaviour found for particles interacting via a soft isotropic potential. This stems from t

HITS/Transparens Slutrapport

Animals and the Politics of Suffering : Essays on Law, Care and Interspecies Relations

För detta ändamål använder avhandlingen rättssociologiska och tvärThis compilation thesis aims to develop an understanding of the ethical, legal and political implications associated with different strategies to address the suffering of animals caused by industrialised agriculture. Based on qualitative analysis conducted in Denmark, the research explores how ethical commitment to the situation of farmed animals is negotiated across different domains. The thesis

Introducing Projectification Research

This chapter introduces the concept of projectification, a concept that aims to capture an increasing reliance on ‘the project’ in our contemporary societies and economies. A project is often thought of as a temporary endeavour undertaken to create a unique product, service or result. However, sometimes ‘the project’ refers to something less tangible, to a discursive theme in contemporary society This chapter introduces the concept of projectification, a concept that aims to capture an increasing reliance on ‘the project’ in our contemporary societies and economies. The Role of Discretion from the Perspective of Social Work Professionalism and Automated Decision Making

This article addresses the gap in knowledge about how new digital technology affects decision making and social caseworkers’ professionalism. The aim is to enhance the understanding of how digital discretion—as a result of introducing automated decision making (ADM) in social assistance—affects the roles, work processes and professional judgements of social caseworkers in the provision of social a

Organizational Psychology: When, Why, and How Is Identity Work (Less) Important in Organizational Life?

This chapter examines if identity is as important as is often claimed, and as a consequence, when and why concerns of identity are triggered in working life, and we do so through a constructionist identity perspective. In the chapter, we argue that many people do not necessarily engage with their identities most of the time and explore why they do in certain kinds of jobs and in particular situati

Assessing the effect of d-xylose on the sugar signaling pathways of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in strains engineered for xylose transport and assimilation

One of the challenges of establishing an industrially competitive process to ferment lignocellulose to value-added products using Saccharomyces cerevisiae is to get efficient mixed sugar fermentations. Despite successful metabolic engineering strategies, the xylose assimilation rates of recombinant S. cerevisiae remain significantly lower than for the preferred carbon source, glucose. Previously,

Scanning or desorption isotherms? : Characterising sorption hysteresis of wood

Sorption isotherms describe the relation between the equilibrium moisture content of a material and the ambient relative humidity. Most materials exhibits sorption hysteresis, that is, desorption give higher equilibrium moisture contents than absorption at equal ambient climate conditions. Disordered eating in a community sample of Swedish adolescent girls

Previous research has described that disordered eating (DE) is common in adolescents, especially in girls. DE is defined as maladaptive behaviours (e.g., vomiting) and negative attitudes toward eating and one’s body shape, appearance, and weight. The present thesis had several aims. First, to validate a Swedish version of a Danish 8-item screening inventory, Risk Behaviour for Eating Disorders/RiB

Recent advances in long-term climate and moisture reconstructions from the Baltic region: Exploring the potential for a new multi- millennial tree-ring chronology
