Phase diagrams come alive: understanding how to create, destroy or change ordered surfactant structures by polymerizing the counterions

Free radical polymerization of acrylate counterions to cationic alkyltrimethylammonium surfactant ions was performed in aqueous media. The results of the reactions were either formation, destruction or change of liquid crystalline surfactant structures, depending on the starting conditions such as the surfactant concentration, the content of inert counterions and the monomer-to-initiator ratio. Th

Electron microscopy of some molybdenum oxide phases after use as catalysts in oxidative ammonolysis and ammoxidation of toluene

Five molybdenum oxide samples, subjected to conditions of oxidative ammonolysis and ammoxidation of toluene at 450 and 460°C, respectively, have been characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and specific surface area measurements. In oxidative ammonolysis, the relatively large, freshly prepared MoO3 crystals are reduced to smaller MoO2 crystals with a c

Asian Models of Agricultural Development and their Relevance to Afrika

This working paper discusses the different Asian experiences of the Green Revolution from the late 1960s to the 1980s in the perspective of earlier developments of agricultural intensification. The intention of the paper is to identify common features and conditions contributing to the considerable success of Asian agriculture over the past 30 years. The authors argue that the Green Revolution mus

Treatment of dye wastewater containing acid orange II using a cell with three-phase three-dimensional electrode

The removal of color and chemical oxygen demand (COD) from simulated dye wastewater containing Acid Orange II was experimentally investigated using coagulation-electrooxidation. Two kinds of coagulation methods, ferrous-mediated coagulation and electrocoagulation were tested as pretreatment. The electrooxidation was carried out in a cell with a three-phase three-dimensional electrode using granula

Quasielastic neutron scattering of hydrated BaZr(0.90)A(0.10)O(2.95) (A = Y and Sc)

Proton motions in hydrated proton conducting perovskites BaZr(0.90)A(0.10)O(2.95) (A = Y and Sc) have been investigated using quasielastic neutron scattering. The results reveal a localized motion on the ps time scale and with an activation energy of similar to 10-30 meV, in both materials. The temperature dependence of the total mean square displacement of the protons shows an onset of this motio

Activities of V-Ti-O Catalysts in the Ammoxidation of 3-Picoline

Ammoxidation of 3-picoline was studied on reduced V-Ti-O catalysts with V6O13 as the major vanadium oxide. The results showed that the initial activity as a function of the TiO2 content reached a maximum at 50–60 mole% TiO2. It is proposed that there is maximum contact between the vanadium and titanium phases at this composition, which results in a weakening of the (VO)3+ surface bond. The selecti

Poly(Lactide-co-Glycolide) in Controlled-Release Pharmaceuticals - Release Mechanisms

Det finns även andra grupper av läkemedelssubstanser som ökar i omfattnControlled-release formulations reduce the frequency of injections and better maintain plasma concentrations within the therapeutic window. Poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLG) is currently the most frequently used biodegradable polymer for this application. In order to be able to control the release rate, it is vital to know the underlying release mechanisms. A novel method for measuring the diff

interactIVe introduces active intervention safety systems in order to increase traffic safety. The interactIVe functions are – depending on their purpose – able to brake and steer autonomously. Furthermore, the driver is continuously supported by interactIVe assistance systems which warn the driver in potentially dangerous situations. Seven demonstrator vehicles – six passenger cars of different v

Dynamic Description with Computer Supported Pictures

A methodology was developed and tested in six case studies at four medium-sized manufacturing companies within the machine engineering industry. Existing and planned work environments and production processes were described with the aid of computer-generated pictures. The pictures were used within the framework of an action research methodology in which managers and those employees affected, toget

New manufacturing methods for electric motors using different soft magnetic material combinations

This paper presents the manufacturing experience of an outer rotor permanent magnet synchronous machine with four different stators. The advantageous features of powder technology and molding techniques are tested when constructing and manufacturing the stators for a 28-pole 30-slot machine. The selected machine configuration is taking advantages of the concept of the modular windings and at the s

Permian-Triassic boundary interval in the Middle East (Iran and N. Oman) : Progressive environmental change from detailed carbonate carbon isotope marine curve and sedimentary evolution

The end Permian negative δ13C excursion is well known but its cause and chronology are still in question. In an attempt to decipher the timing and reasons for this strong decrease, we established high-resolution sedimentological, biostratigraphical and carbonate carbon isotopic studies in four sections in Iran (Abadeh, Shareeza, Zal and Djulfa) and two in Oman (Wadi Sahtan). The position of the se

The Membrane-Spanning Domain of Complex I Investigated with Fusion Protein Techniques

I, is a large, complex and poorly understood bioenergetic enzyme in the respiratory chain of living organisms. The enzyme has a conserved core structure, comprising fourteen protein subunits: Seven subunits protrude from the membrane and contain a flavin prosthetic group and eight iron-sulfur clusters that guide electrons from the oxidation of NADH towards t

Production and characterisation of cellulose Binding Domain tagged Amelogenin

För att producera proteiner som har förmågan att reThe use of fusion proteins has become prevalent within biotechnical applications, offering a method of supplementing a protein with physical or chemical properties inherent to multiple full size proteins or peptides. The thesis work presented in this report was designed to attempt such a fusion, between a recombinant human amelogenin and a fungal cellulose binding domain peptide. The extracellular

My master’s thesis project is an exploration of how a new distributon model could be implemented in a swedish local food chain in order to make local food accessible and attractive to a larger group of people. The interest in local food is increasing rapidly in Sweden. Farmers are turning directly to consumers for increased profit and less pressure from the industry. At the same time consumers ar

Contig assembly and plasmid analysis using DNA barcodes

Two methods of computational analysis of DNA barcodes are presented. A DNA barcode is formed by making GC-rich regions of a DNA molecule fluoresce while AT-rich regions remain dark, thus when stretched using nano-channels and viewed in a microscope, the DNA molecule will resemble a barcode with black and white stripes. Because of point-spread functions and pixellation the resolution will be roughl

TOYS & MEMORIES - A RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS

TOYS & MEMORIES What makes some toys great? This was the question that started this entire project. When remembering toys from ones childhood there are always some toys that are more commonly referenced. Were these toys “the best toys” and more importantly: what traits made them better, and can they be replicated? A toy is something created with the main purpose of being a catalyst for ones i
