MolinaBesch_Olsson2016

MolinaBesch_Olsson2016 LTHs 9:e Pedagogiska Inspirationskonferens, 15 december 2016 Abstract — In a world where technical knowledge gets outdated in an ever increasing speed, it is important that engineering education provides students not only with broad technical competences but also with so-called soft skills such as communications skills, leadership skills and team-working skills. When it come

‘Ghost’ fossils of early coccolithophores point to a Triassic diversification of marine calcifying organisms

Over geologic time, biocalcification – the process by which marine organisms make calcium carbonate (CaCO3) – has reshaped climates, ocean life, and seawater chemistry. In particular, the evolution of coccolithophores, the largest group of nannoplankton and today’s most productive calcifiers, transformed ocean environments and the carbon cycle. Their origins, however, remain enigmatic. This is par

Begreppet ‘verk’ utgör ett självständigt unionsrättsIn order for a subject matter to enjoy copyright protection as a work according to EU copyright law the subject matter must be original, in the sense that it is the author’s own intellectual creation. The meaning of this criteria of originality has been developed continuously by the Court of Justice of the European Union, most recently in Joined Cases, C 580/23 and C 795/23 (Mio). The term work is

Associations between the thermal spring timing variability and atmospheric teleconnection patterns over the past six decades in Finland

The timing of the spring season in the boreal region is shifting under global warming, with profound impacts on ecosystems and hydrological processes. However, the mechanisms driving this transition and its considerable interannual variability are not well described, especially regarding the influence of large-scale atmospheric teleconnection patterns. This study examines the temporal variability

Robustness Assessment of Images From a 0.35T Scanner of an Integrated MRI-Linac : Characterization of Radiomics Features in Phantom and Patient Data

Purpose: Radiomics entails the extraction of quantitative imaging biomarkers (or radiomics features) hypothesized to provide additional pathophysiological and/or clinical information compared to qualitative visual observation and interpretation. This retrospective study explores the variability of radiomics features extracted from images acquired with the 0.35 T scanner of an integrated MRI-Linac.

Using Instagram in participatory visual methods - limitations of the platform

Interviews where photographs taken by the respondent are used in order to stimulate the conversation and to gain rich empirical material are increasingly employed by researchers. The ubiquitous use of mobile cameras and digital platforms such as Instagram has made it easier for the researcher as well as for the interviewees to take and share photographs. Stability of oxaliplatin in chloride-containing carrier solutions used in hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy

PURPOSE: Oxaliplatin is increasingly becoming the chemotherapeutic drug of choice for the treatment of peritoneal malignancies using cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS-HIPEC). Oxaliplatin is unstable in chloride-containing media, resulting in the use of 5% dextrose as the carrier solution in these procedures. Exposure of the peritoneum to 5% dextrose during pe

The COSC-2 drill core and its well-preserved lower Palaeozoic sedimentary succession – an unexpected treasure beneath the Caledonian nappes

The Collisional Orogeny in the Scandinavian Caledonides (COSC) project focuses on processes related to the closure of the Iapetus Ocean, causing the Ordovician–Silurian continent– continent collision between Baltica and Laurentia. The rock succession in the second drill core (COSC-2) from the Jämtland County, central Sweden, provides the base for detailed sedimentological, stratigraphic, geophysic

Research on Technology Spillover Effects on Agricultural Productivity in China

Technology contributes to the modern economic development directly and indirectly, and it changes the operating system and working method during the economic transformation. Along with institutional reform and modern economic structural transformation of China, agriculture still plays an ineradicable role in the development of Chinese economy, and it is the cornerstone for countries with large pop

On Reduction of Nitrogen Oxides in Heavy-Duty Engines : with NOx Model Feedback, PPC and SNCR

European emission legislation has in recent years put a strict limit on NOx emissionsfrom heavy-duty truck engines. EGR and selective catalytic reduction are the two mostcommon technologies applied in a modern heavy-duty diesel engine to fulfill the legislation. The scope of this thesis is to explore other ways of reducing NOx emissions emittedby a heavy-duty engine. Several technology options are

Why and when should organisms elongate their telomeres? : Elaborations on the 'excess resources elongation' and 'last resort elongation' hypotheses

Telomere length and telomere shortening are thought to be critical cellular attributes and processes that are related to an individual's life span and fitness. The general pattern across most taxa is that after birth telomere length gradually decreases with age. Telomere protection and restoration mechanisms are usually assumed to reduce the rate of shortening or at most keep telomere length const

Identification of a novel panel of cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease

An early and accurate diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is required to initiate symptomatic treatment with currently approved drugs and will be of even greater importance if disease modifying compounds in development display a clinical effect. Protein profiles of human cerebrospinal fluid samples from AD patients (n = 95) and population-based healthy controls (n = 72) were analyzed by SELDI-TO

International Biofuel Trade - A Study of the Swedish Import

Following the development of large-scale use of biomass energy in the EU, international biofuel trade is a plausible scenario and something that is already taking place in Northern Europe. This paper focuses on Swedish biofuel imports, both direct and indirect imports, the latter which derive from the fact that part of the imported pulpwood and timber end up as fuel. The objective is to describe t

Emission of thermally activated electrons from rare gas clusters irradiated with intense VUV light pulses from a free electron laser

The ionization dynamics of Ar and Xe clusters irradiated with intense vacuum ultraviolet light from a free-electron laser is investigated using photoelectron spectroscopy. Clusters comprising between 70 and 900 atoms were irradiated with femtosecond pulses at 95 nm wavelength (similar to 13 eV photon energy) and a peak intensity of similar to 4x10(12) W/cm(2). A broad thermal distribution of emitt
