Implementation of national palliative care guidelines in Swedish acute care hospitals : A qualitative content analysis of stakeholders’ perceptions

In high-income countries a large proportion of all deaths occur in hospitals. A common way to translate knowledge into clinical practice is developing guidelines for different levels of health care organisations. During 2012, national clinical guidelines for palliative care were published in Sweden. Later, guidance for palliative care was issued by the National Board of Health and Welfare. The aim

Industrialized Building Companies' Business Models : Multiple Case Study of Swedish and North American Companies

Industrialized building companies apply various product predefinition strategies, derived from market- or resource-based strategic perspectives. This strongly affects the buildup of such companies' business models and their operational structure. Ten companies were included in a case study, presenting strategic orientations and business models. The aim of this study was to analyze the primary char

The potential of power-to-heat in Swedish district heating systems

The main challenge for future electricity systems is to match the available electricity from variable renewable resources with the electricity demand in place, time and quantity. One option for increasing electricity system flexibility is to integrate the electricity system with the district heating systems via the use of power-to-heat technologies such as electric boilers. The overarching objecti

Technical advances of the recombinant antibody microarray technology platform for clinical immunoproteomics

In the quest for deciphering disease-associated biomarkers, high-performing tools for multiplexed protein expression profiling of crude clinical samples will be crucial. Affinity proteomics, mainly represented by antibody-based microarrays, have during recent years been established as a proteomic tool providing unique opportunities for parallelized protein expression profiling. But despite the pro

High folate intake is associated with lower breast cancer incidence in postmenopausal women in the Malmö Diet and Cancer cohort

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic studies of associations between folate intake and breast cancer are inconclusive, but folate and other plant food nutrients appear protective in women at elevated risk.OBJECTIVE: The objective was to examine the association between folate intake and the incidence of postmenopausal breast cancer.DESIGN: This prospective study included all women aged >or=50 y (n = 11699) fr

Adrenocorticotrophic hormone exerts marked lipid-lowering effects in simvastatin-treated patients

Objective. Recently, it was reported that treatment with adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) has a strong lipid-lowering effect in healthy individuals. The mechanism behind this has not been established. The aim of the present investigation was to study the effect of ACTH on the plasma lipoprotein pattern in patients treated with a 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase inhibitor. Design

Orientational correlation function and persistence lengths of flexible polyelectrolytes

Orientational correlation functions have been obtained from Monte Carlo simulations of long, freely jointed chains (1000 monomers and more) with screened Coulomb interactions truncated after a certain number of bonds. This makes it possible to study chain-length dependence without "end effects" and to display excluded-volume effects. These correlation functions form the basis for a discussion of t

Macroporous monolithic hydrogels in a 96-minicolumn plate format for cell surface-analysis and integrated binding/quantification of cells

Macroporous monolithic hydrogels (cryogel monoliths; rods 12.5 mm x 7.1 mm diameter) are elastic, sponge-like materials with large (10-100 mu m), interconnected pores. Phenyl- and IMAC-(Me(II)-iminodiacetic acid)-cryogel monoliths were inserted into the open-ended wells of a standard 96-well plate, forming a system of 96 drainage-protected minicolumns, and were used in a parallel assay of hydropho

Interpreters, translators and travelling agents: the role of tongshi in Sino-Tibetan relations

This paper examines the development of the role of a certain group of semi-officials, known as tongshi in Chinese, in Sino-Tibetan relations from the late-fourteenth century to the end of the eighteenth century, i.e. during the Ming and Qing dynasties, with particular reference to the part played by tongshi in events along the pre-modern Sino-Tibetan border. Tongshi were often Tibetans in Chinese

Electroconvulsive seizures increase hippocampal neurogenesis after chronic corticosterone treatment

Major depression is often associated with elevated glucocorticoid levels. High levels of glucocorticoids reduce neurogenesis in the adult rat hippocampus. Electroconvulsive seizures (ECS) can enhance neurogenesis, and we investigated the effects of ECS in rats where glucocorticoid levels were elevated in order to mimic conditions seen in depression. Rats given injections of corticosterone or vehic

Exacerbations of asthma: a descriptive study of 425 severe exacerbations. The FACET International Study Group

The identification, prevention, and prompt treatment of exacerbations are major objectives of asthma management. We looked at change in PEF, symptoms, and use of rescue beta-agonists during the 425 severe exacerbations that occurred during a 12-mo parallel group study (FACET) in which low and high doses of budesonide with and without formoterol were compared in patients with asthma. Oral corticost

Quality of life of elderly persons with newly diagnosed cancer.

The aim was to investigate quality of life (QoL) in elderly persons newly diagnosed with cancer (65+ years) in relation to age, contact with the health-care system, ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL), hope, social network and support, and to identify which factors were associated with low QoL. The sample consisted of 101 patients (75 women and 26 men) newly diagnosed with cancer.

Five-year follow-up of socket movements and loosening after revision with impacted morselized allograft bone and cement - A radiostereometric and radiographic analysis

In 1999, we reported on the 2-year results of a series of 21 first-time socket revisions using impacted morselized allograft bone. Seven still migrated between 1.5 and 2 years. Seventeen remained for the current 5-year follow-up. No socket had been rerevised. Five sockets showed signs of radiographic loosening. These 5 cases also exhibited radiographic signs of allograft resorption as well as high

Benchmarking subcellular localization and variant tolerance predictors on membrane proteins

Background: Membrane proteins constitute up to 30% of the human proteome. These proteins have special properties because the transmembrane segments are embedded into lipid bilayer while extramembranous parts are in different environments. Membrane proteins have several functions and are involved in numerous diseases. A large number of prediction methods have been introduced to predict protein subc

A perspective on the interpretability of poverty maps derived from Earth Observation

The use of Earth Observation Data and Machine Learning models to generate gridded micro-level poverty maps has increased in recent years, with several high-profile publications. producing some compelling results. Poverty alleviation remains one of the most critical global challenges. Earth Observation (EO) technologies represent a promising avenue to enhance our ability to address poverty through

Upplevda hinder såväl som ungdomars situationsspecifika självförtroende att övervinna dessa hinder är två av de starkaste prediktorerna för fysisk aktivitet, och därmed av stoGiven the known health benefits of physical activity (PA), the decreasing levels of PA during adolescence and differences in PA levels between young males and females are causes of concern. Perceived barriers towards physical activity as well as the adolescents‟ self-efficacy to overcome those barriers are two of the strongest predictors for PA, thus of major importance when investigating how to i

Corruption, global environmental degradation and multinational corporations – Is there a correlation?

The findings of this thesis suggest that there appears to be a bad spiral. In countries with a lot of natural resources and poorly developed socio-economic structures, there is a present tendency to lower environmental protection laws in order to attract foreign investors by creating market oriented regulations. Investors and managers of multinational corporations will reduce production costs by m
