By presenting cancer research as a battle between good and evil – and himself as a hacker attacking cells to make them kind, PhD student Luís Oliveira took home the win in the Researchers' Grand Prix. His win is the fifth in a row for Lund University and the second in a row for Lund Stem Cell Center - in the competition where researchers from all over the country challenge each other in presentati

A medical doctor in both war and peace

A sudden bang. The hand grenade has caused me severe shrapnel injuries: a punctured lung, my liver is bleeding and the wound on my leg is causing rapid blood loss. The medics decide that this requires an intervention from the trauma squad. I am loaded onto a stretcher and driven to the surgery tent. It is Monday morning, and the Aurora 23 military exercise is in full swing in southern Sweden. I am

Star-studded tomes from the Astronomy Library move to new home

Around 100 select astronomy books dating from 1545 to 1799 have been relocated from the Astronomy Library to the University Library. LUM was there as the books were packed away, and again, several months later, after they had been quarantined and it was time to catalogue, encapsulate and put them in storage. Next year, the rarest volumes will be digitalised and perhaps even be displayed. Outside A

Children and biologists research biodiversity together

Preschool and primary school children will now be able to learn more about insects, birds, flowers and plants, how valuable they are and how people can protect nature. The Natural Nations co-operation project is introducing biodiversity into the curriculum. In the past, knowledge of species and nature was part of general education, and knowledge was also transmitted between generations. Today, the

New national board to take over cases of research misconduct

On 1 January 2020, a new law will come into force that means that cases concerning research misconduct are to be forwarded to a new national board exclusively dedicated to this. At Lund University, this will involve two or three current cases that will not be finalised in time.  "The purpose of the act is good, however, the allocation of responsibilities between the new board and ourselves is unfo

Fewer flights for Lund University staff in 2019

In 2019, the number of flights for business travel decreased by nearly 10 per cent at the University. At the same time, train travel increased by 20 per cent.   “There are many deliberate individual decisions behind this. We are on the right track!” says the head of sustainability Claes Nilén. Chemists jump on the Science Village bandwagon

"Now I dare to rejoice a little", says Sven Lidin, dean of the Faculty of Science. "The uphill task that establishment in Brunnshög had become at times is now much easier, as the whole Department of Chemistry has agreed to join in the move." Another person breathing a sigh of relief is Leif Bülow, who is in his fourth year as head of the department. These years have been marked by extensive discus

As Colombia hosts a UN biodiversity summit, its own Amazonian rainforest is in crisis

The city of Cali, in Colombia, is hosting the UN’s 16th biodiversity summit, known as Cop16. The summit, which runs until Friday, November 1, is focused on how countries will fulfil previous pledges to protect at least 30% of the world’s land and water and restore 30% of degraded ecosystems by 2030. It’s a noble aim, yet Colombia itself shows just how far we have to go. If you travel south east fr

Ice from the Stone Age might reveal future solar storms

Contained within Greenland’s millennia-old ice are the traces of gigantic solar storms.
