Costs in Relation to Disability, Disease Activity, and Health-related Quality of Life in Rheumatoid Arthritis : Observational Data from Southern Sweden

Objective. To compare how costs relate to disability, disease activity, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods. Antitumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF)-treated patients with RA in southern Sweden (n = 2341) were monitored 2005-2010. Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ), 28-joint Disease Activity Score (DAS28), and EQ-5D scores were linked to register-derived

Automation of audio descriptions of large bar charts for persons with visual impairment – prototyping and proof of concept

BACKGROUND: Current guidelines for accessing graphs non-visually are based on giving access to underlying tabular data and reading the values one by one. When data sets are large, it becomes impossible to get an overview.OBJECTIVE: This work presents a proof-of-concept of automated audio description of data sets up to 100 data points that can be used by persons with visual impairment or persons wh

Arrested dynamics in a model peptide hydrogel system

We report here on a peptide hydrogel system, which in contrast to most other such systems, is made up of relatively short fibrillar aggregates, discussing resemblance with colloidal rods. The synthetic model peptides A8K and A10K, where A denotes alanine and K lysine, self-assemble in aqueous solutions into ribbon-like aggregates having an average length 〈L〉 on the order of 100 nm and with a diame

Personal networks and crime victimization among Swedish youth

We combine routine activity theory, lifestyle-victimization theory, and a social network perspective to examine crime victimization. In particular, we study to what extent crime victimization is associated with having close contacts who have been victimized and/or who engage in risky lifestyles. We use the data (collected in 2014) of 1,051 native Swedes and 1,108 Iranian and Yugoslavian first- or

Progression of frailty and prevalence of osteoporosis in a community cohort of older women—a 10-year longitudinal study

Summary: In community dwelling, 75-year-old women followed 10 years, a frailty index was created at each of three visits. Frailty score increased by ~ 6–7% annually. A higher frailty score was equivalent to being 5–10 years chronologically older. Frailty was associated with low bone density and higher risk of dying. Introduction: To understand the distribution of frailty among a population-based s

Tvångssyndrom - Hur är det att växa upp med en tvångssjuk i familjen?

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, OCD, is a disease which 2-3 % of the Swedish population suffers from. The purpose of this essay was to examine how the disease affects the children who grow up in families where somebody has got OCD. Our first question was: In which way did relative’s disease affect the child? The second question was: How did the relative’s disease affect the child’s relations to the

The Tastes of Discrimination: A qualitative field study investigating experienced economic racial discrimination against Syrian refugees in Beirut, Lebanon

Economic and racial discrimination goes hand in hand in the case of Syrian refugees in the labour market in Lebanon. Ever since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011, millions of the Syrian population has fled abroad, most of whom are currently residing in its neighbouring countries, Lebanon, Turkey, and Jordan. Lebanon currently has the largest number of Syrian refugees per capita, putting pr

Vilken påverkan har barnets vilja i tvister gällande vårdnad, boende och umgänge? Analys av tingsrättsdomar från 2019 & 2020

The adolescent experience has over the last twenty years differed immensely from earlier generations. Generation Z, born somewhere between 1995 and 2010, are what some would call ‘digital natives’, being the very first children to be brought up in a digital advanced world with easy access to information and inspiration through constant connection to the world wide web. This research draws in parti

Mängden mental träninThis paper aimed to study to what extent Swedish elite athletes engage themselves in psychological skills training (PST). The study was conducted through a web-based survey with 47 respondents (28 men, 19 women, age 16-37, M=25) from five sports; handball, ice hockey, soccer, tennis and track and field. The results showed that the athletes spend on average 41 minutes a week on different types of m

A Trick of the Tail: The Effect of Amyloid Formation on the pKa Values of α-synuclein

The formation of α-synuclein amyloid fibrils and accumulation in inclusion bodies termed Lewy bodies are considered the hallmark of Parkinson’s disease. It has been found that the formation of fibrils is highly pH dependent, which is thought to be linked to the highly negatively charged C-terminal tail of α-synuclein. The aim of this project was to study if the pKa values of the C-terminal tail in

Determinants of continued maternal care seeking during pregnancy, birth and postnatal and associated neonatal survival outcomes in Kenya and Uganda : analysis of cross-sectional, demographic and health surveys data

The role of eclipses and european observers in the development of ‘modern astronomy’ in Thailand

‘Modern astronomy’ was introduced to Siam (present-day Thailand) (Siam officially changed its name to Thailand in 1939) when the Belgian Jesuit missionary-astronomer Father Antoine Thomas carried out stellar and lunar eclipse observations during 1681 and 1682 in order to determine the latitude and longitude of Ayutthaya. Three years later a contingent of French Jesuit missionary astronomers observ

Participatory Spaces Under Urban Capitalism : Contesting the Boundaries of Democratic Practices

Can people use new participatory spaces to reclaim their rights as citizens and challenge structures of political power? This book carefully examines the constraints and possibilities for participatory governance under capitalism. To understand what is at stake in the politics of participation, we need to look beyond the values commonly associated with it. Citizens face a dilemma: should they parti

Refining the properties of the TOI-178 system with CHEOPS and TESS

Context. The TOI-178 system consists of a nearby late K-dwarf transited by six planets in the super-Earth to mini-Neptune regime, with radii ranging from -1.1 to 2.9 R and orbital periods between 1.9 and 20.7 days. All planets but the innermost one form a chain of Laplace resonances. Mass estimates derived from a preliminary radial velocity (RV) dataset suggest that the planetary densities do not

Is an empty forest a doomed forest? A study of how seed mortality is affected by density and type of cover

Numerous papers and studies have shown that the rainforests are experiencing a decline in biodiversity. The rainforests are getting depleted of larger primates and this poses a problem for the trees as many of them rely on primates and other seed dispersers to distribute their seeds. These empty forests are spreading, but does that mean that everything is hopeless? This study aims to investigate t

Gröna miljöer som rehabilitering för psykisk ohälsa : en kvalitativ studie om hur gröna miljöer kan bidra till en större känsla av sammanhang för individer med psykisk ohälsa

In Sweden the most common reason for sick leave is stress and fatigue. Due to mental illness the number of sick leaves increase. The aim of this qualitative study was to gain an understanding of how horticultural therapy/naturalized rehabilitation as a rehabilitation method can achieve a broader sense of coherence for individuals who suffer from mental illness. In the data collection, semi-structu
