Ion microprobe discovery of archaean and early proterozoic zircon xenocrysts in southwest Sweden

A single zircon grain dated by ion probe with a minimum age of 3432±30 Ma was found in a microgranite dyke, which cuts norite of 916±11 Ma Hakefjorden Complex at Älgön on the Swedish west coast north of Gothenburg. Zircons are a rare accessory mineral in this dyke. They could be classified by morphology as orthocrysts and xenocrysts. Data from four orthocrysts show that the dyke originated between

Large-Eddy Simulations of Separated Flow and Heat Transfer in a Ribbed Channel

Ribbed channel flows are encountered in numerous engineering applications to promote turbulence and enhance heat transfer in various cooling passages, e.g., in turbine blades and at combustor walls. Numerical simulations have become an increasingly useful tool for studying the behavior of fluids in rib-roughened channels to provide insights into the complex turbulence structures and flow separatio

Large Eddy Simulation and Experiments of the Auto-Ignition Process of Lean Ethanol / Air Mixture in HCCI Engines

Recent experiments and numerical studies have showed that piston geometry has a significant effect on the homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) process. There are two effects generated by the combustor geometry: the geometry affects the flow/turbulence in the cylinder; the geometry also affects the temperature stratification. The temperature stratification is more directly responsible for

Effect of Temperature Stratification on the Auto-Ignition of Lean Ethanol/Air Mixture in HCCI Engine

It has been known from multi-zone simulations that HCCI combustion can be significantly affected by temperature stratification of the in-cylinder gas. With the same combustion timing (i.e., crank angles at 50% heat release, denoted as CA50), large temperature stratification tends to prolong the combustion duration and lower down the in-cylinder pressure-rise-rate. With low pressure-rise-rate HCCI

Postantibiotiska framtider en

Post-Antibiotic Futures – Interrogating the realities and imaginings of the post-antibiotic era THEME 2019-2020 Today, antibiotic resistance is an international fact; an estimated 50,000 people die every year in Europe and The United States as a result of bacteria that have become resistant. However, imagination can easily conjure up an escalation and an even more dystopian future. Thus, it is est

A comparison between mechanical properties of self-compacting concrete and the corresponding properties of normal concrete

An experimental and numerical study on mechanical properties, such as strength, elastic modulus, creep and shrinkage, of Self-Compacting Concrete, SCC, and the corresponding properties of Normal Compacting concrete, NC, is outlined in this article. The study included eight mix proportions of sealed or air-cured specimens with water-binder ratio, w/b, varying between 0.24 and 0.80. Half of the mixe

Carbohydrate recognition by enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli: characterization of a novel glycosphingolipid from cat small intestine

A key virulence trait of pathogenic bacteria is the ability to bind to receptors on mucosal cells. Here the potential glycosphingolipid receptors of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli were examined by binding of S-35-labeled bacteria to glycosphingolipids on thin-layer chromatograms. Thereby a selective interaction with two nonacid glycosphingolipids of cat small intestinal epithelium was found. T

Gaia Data Release 3 : Hot-star radial velocities

Context. The second Gaia data release, DR2, contained radial velocities of stars with effective temperatures up to Teff = 6900 K. The third data release, Gaia DR3, extends this up to Teff = 14 500 K. Aims.We derive the radial velocities for hot stars (i.e., in the Teff = 6900-14 500K range) from data obtained with the Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS) on board Gaia. Methods. The radial velocities
