The Moral Landscape of Prenatal Diagnosis

This chapter deals with the Swedish regulation of prenatal diagnosis and the various arguments posed for or against such regulation, including whether there should be any changes in the legislation of late-term abortions. Using the metaphor ‘moral landscape,’ it explores how actors such as physicians, disability organizations, and women’s organizations negotiated their position on an issue that wa

A single formant explicates the ubiquity of “meow”

Across languages, the species–typical vocalization by domes-tic cats (Felis catus silvestris) is transcribed similarly, typicallycorresponding to [miau:] or [waU:]. Such consistent and ubiqui-tous cross-linguistic transcription is apparently onomatopoetic. However, in humans, these qualities make unique use of thetongue; in comparison, most nonhuman mammals do not ap-pear to employ their tongues wh

Post hoc interventions and the General Data Protection Regulation

Post hoc interventions rely on having access to certain personal data - such as the gender, age, ethnicity, and sexual orientation of the persons being evaluated - in order to detect and correct for prejudice. This brings these interventions into possible tension with pertinent data protection legislation, which might restrict the processing of said data. We discuss the compatibility of post hoc i

Since its heyday in the 1960 and 70s, the sociology of literature has been declared dead and gone, yet research related to the field also seems to be reemerging in the first decades of the 21st century. Research relating to the field is scattered across other disciplines, such as literary studies, media studies and cultural studies; indeed, sociology of literature is “everywhere and nowhere”, as J

Fast-track Sociology? Reflections on Research During a Pandemic

When the coronavirus spread globally in early 2020, many governments issued national lock downs of schools, institutions, and businesses. As the epidemic turned into a pandemic, the health crisis also became a societal crisis, and many universities and research foundations issued COVID-19 grants to study the societal implications of the crisis. In this article, we discuss sociological research dur

Fighting Covid-19 amidst civil conflict : Micro-level evidence from Burkina Faso

How does violent conflict affect the spread of Covid-19? In this paper we analyze how violent conflict influences the adoption of preventative measures and infection rate in a very poor, conflict-affected country, Burkina Faso. We use a unique panel of 1,919 households surveyed during the first six months of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and merge these data with indicators of violence at the muniHow does violent conflict affect the spread of Covid-19? The Trojan Horse of Local Government

The aim of this chapter is to illustrate the latent functions of projectification using local government practices as an example and explore organisational consequences of an increasing reliance on a project logic. Inspired by the institutional logic perspective, local government and their organisations are studied as sites where several, coexisting institutional logics are ‘available’ for civil s

Translating trust as a magic concept in public sector reforms: A comparative study of the Danish and Swedish trust reform

In response to growing criticism of new public management reforms, the Nordic countries have introduced so-called trust reforms aimed at transforming public sector management and leadership. There is, however, scarce knowledge about the role of organizational concepts in national trust reform and how they are translated, not least in a comparative perspective. This study offers an in-depth analysiIn response to growing criticism of new public management reforms, the Nordic countries have introduced so-called trust reforms aimed at transforming public sector management and leadership. The fallacy of discrete authentic leader behaviours: Locating authentic leadership in interaction

The concept of authentic leadership is increasingly the focus of much leadership scholarship, and many have called for a review of the basic assumptions that underpin it. Taking an interactional approach to authentic leadership (AL) and using naturally occurring workplace interaction as data, we seek to question two basic assumptions of AL scholarship, namely (1) that authentic leadership emanates

Operationalizing Project Success Criteria through Control Degree

This study explores the control degree in success criteria operationalization. A literature review reveals that control degree relates to two patterns operationalizing success criteria: one directed to measurement and measure selection; the other directed to operationalization through the conceptualization of a relationship between a specific factor and project success. The living standards of the labouring classes in Sweden, 1750–1900: Evidence from rural probate inventories

We present new estimates of the living standards among the rural labouring classes in Sweden from 1750 to 1900. Starting with a database of more than 1,000 probate inventories of rural, landless and semi-landless people from the years 1750, 1800, 1850 and 1900, we study the development for crofters in particular. In a sub-sample of 120 probate inventories we map in great detail the material items

Lärare och forskare vid svenska lärosäten under 2000-talet

The Academic Profession in Swedish HigherEducation: Continuity and Change in the New CenturyThe purpose of this article is to describe the composition and internal stratification of the university teaching staff at Swedish higher education institutions. We show that four fault lines shape the higher education field in the 21st century. These are, firstly, the resource hierarchies both between old

The crofter is a woman: Gender division of labour in rural semi-landless households, Sweden 1850–1900

This paper contributes to the empirical question of the labour organization and gender division of labour in a semi-landless rural group during the second half of the nineteenth century, a period charac-terized by developing agrarian capitalism. Thereby, we also add to the broader question of the role of gender division of labour in economic transformation. Through a triangulation of sources – cro

FDI’s Impact on Economic Growth: Czech Republic and Lithuania

This paper examines the dynamics between foreign direct investment and economic growth. As scientific literature fails to provide common conclusion about FDI’s effect on host economy, investigation of single country can reveal the new aspects. Moreover, the contribution to literature of transition economies is made by choosing Czech Republic and Lithuania. Econometric analysis is employed in order
