Ferroelectric-Antiferroelectric Transition of Hf1- xZrxO2on Indium Arsenide with Enhanced Ferroelectric Characteristics for Hf0.2Zr0.8O2

The ferroelectric (FE)-antiferroelectric (AFE) transition in Hf1-xZrxO2 (HZO) is for the first time shown in a metal-ferroelectric-semiconductor (MFS) stack based on the III-V material InAs. As InAs displays excellent electron mobility and a narrow band gap, the integration of ferroelectric thin films for nonvolatile operations is highly relevant for future electronic devices and motivates further

Copy number signatures for early diagnosis of high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma

BackgroundThe detection of ovarian carcinoma-derived somatic mutations in cervical samples and uterine lavages in several studies since 2013, has brought hope for the development of new biomarkers for early detection. High-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSC) is strongly dominated by copy number alterations (CNAs). These CNAs are the consequence of underlying mutational processes in HGSC. We inte

Classification of patients with osteoarthritis through clusters of comorbidities using 633,330 individuals from Spain

OBJECTIVES: To explore clustering of comorbidities among patients with a new diagnosis of osteoarthritis (OA) and estimate the 10-year mortality risk for each identified cluster.METHODS: This is a population-based cohort study of individuals with first incident diagnosis of OA of the hip, knee, ankle/foot, wrist/hand, or 'unspecified' site between 2006 and 2020, using SIDIAP (a primary care databa

Large-bias spectroscopy of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states in a double quantum dot

We have performed tunnel transport spectroscopy on a quantum dot (QD) molecule proximitized by a superconducting contact. In such a system, the scattering between QD spins and Bogoliubov quasiparticles leads to the formation of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states within the superconducting gap. In this work, we investigate interactions appearing when one- and two-electron spin states in a double-QD ener

Lignin recovery from cocoa bean shell using microwave-assisted extraction and deep eutectic solvents

Lignin is the second most abundant natural polymer after cellulose, and valorisation of lignin-rich streams has attracted increasing attention recently. This paper presents a novel and sustainable method to recover lignin from Cocoa Bean Shells (CBS) using Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) and microwaves. A DES containing p-toluenesulfonic acid, choline chloride and glycerol (2:1:1 M ratio) was selecte

An explorative study of inflammation-related proteins associated with kidney injury in male heat-stressed workers

Chronic kidney disease of non-traditional origin (CKDnt) and acute kidney injury (AKI) often affect heat-stressed Mesoamerican manual workers. Inflammation occurs concurrently with AKI in this population, but its role remains unknown. To explore links between inflammation and kidney injury in heat stress, we compared levels of inflammation-related proteins in cutters with and without increasing se

High-quality N-polar GaN optimization by multi-step temperature growth process

We report growth optimization of Nitrogen (N)-polar GaN epitaxial layers by hot-wall metal–organic vapor phase epitaxy on 4H-SiC (000) with a misorientation angle of 4° towards the [110] direction. We find that when using a 2-step temperature process for the N-polar GaN growth, step bunching is persistent for a wide range of growth rates (7 nm/min to 49 nm/min) and V/III ratios (251 to 3774). This

Polarity Control by Inversion Domain Suppression in N-Polar III-Nitride Heterostructures

Nitrogen-polar III-nitride heterostructures offer advantages over metal-polar structures in high frequency and high power applications. However, polarity control in III-nitrides is difficult to achieve as a result of unintentional polarity inversion domains (IDs). Herein, we present a comprehensive structural investigation with both atomic detail and thermodynamic analysis of the polarity evol

Inhibition of HSD17B13 protects against liver fibrosis by inhibition of pyrimidine catabolism in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease, in which prognosis is determined by liver fibrosis. A common variant in hydroxysteroid 17-beta dehydrogenase 13 (HSD17B13, rs72613567-A) is associated with a reduced risk of fibrosis in NAFLD, but the underlying mechanism(s) remains unclear. We investigated the effects of this variant in the human liver and in Hsd17

Quantitative In Vivo Imaging of the Androgen Receptor Axis Reveals Degree of Prostate Cancer Radiotherapy Response

Non-invasive biomarkers for androgen receptor (AR) pathway activation are urgently needed to better monitor patient response to prostate cancer (PCa) therapies. AR is a critical driver and mediator of resistance of PCa but currently available non-invasive PCa biomarkers to monitor AR activity are discordant with downstream AR pathway activity. External beam radiotherapy (EBRT) remains a common tre

Clinical versus MRI grading of the medial collateral ligament in acute knee injury

Sensitivity, specificity, and agreement between clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) gradings of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) after acute knee injury were evaluated in 362 patients. Ninety-seven per cent were injured during sports/recreation. Sensitivity and specificity of MRI for grade II or III MCL injury was 68% (95% CI 58–77%) and 90% (95% CI 86–93%), respectively. Weighted Ka

Minimally Dissipative Information Erasure in a Quantum Dot via Thermodynamic Length

In this Letter, we explore the use of thermodynamic length to improve the performance of experimental protocols. In particular, we implement Landauer erasure on a driven electron level in a semiconductor quantum dot, and compare the standard protocol in which the energy is increased linearly in time with the one coming from geometric optimization. The latter is obtained by choosing a suitable metr

Performance optimization of electric vehicle battery thermal management based on the transcritical CO2 system

Thermal management of electric vehicles, especially battery thermal management, is critical to driving range and operational safety. To find a vehicle thermal management system with higher energy efficiency and environmental protection, an environmentally-friendly and efficient battery and cabin parallel cooling thermal management system was evaluated with CO2 as the working fluid. First, differen

Educational inequalities in fracture-related mortality using multiple cause of death data in the Skåne region, Sweden

AIM: To assess the absolute and relative educational inequalities in mortality from hip and non-hip fractures in Skåne region, Sweden.METHODS: We conducted a population-based open cohort study. People aged 30-99 years, resident in the region during 1998-2013 ( n = 999, 148) were followed until death, their 100th birthday, relocation outside Skåne, or the end of 2014. We obtained individual-level d

Human Neural Stem Cells for Ischemic Stroke Treatment

Ischemic stroke is the second most common cause of death worldwide and a major cause of disability. It takes place when the brain does not receive sufficient blood supply due to the blood clot in the vessels or narrowing of vessels’ inner space due to accumulation of fat products. Apart from thrombolysis (dissolving of blood clot) and thrombectomy (surgical removal of blood clot or widening of ves

Sharing data for future research—engaging participants’ views about data governance beyond the original project : a DIRECT Study

Purpose: Biomedical data governance strategies should ensure that data are collected, stored, and used ethically and lawfully. However, research participants’ preferences for how data should be governed is least studied. The Diabetes Research on Patient Stratification (DIRECT) project collected substantial amounts of health and genetic information from patients at risk of, and with type II diabete

Academic Achievement and Drug Abuse Risk Assessed Using Instrumental Variable Analysis and Co-relative Designs

Importance: Low academic achievement (AA) in childhood and adolescence is associated with increased substance use. Empirical evidence, using longitudinal epidemiologic data, may provide support for interventions to improve AA as a means to reduce risk of drug abuse (DA). Objective: To clarify the nature of the association between adolescent AA and risk of DA by using instrumental variable and co-r
