The coin-turning walk and its scaling limit
Coin classification using a novel technique for learning characteristic decision trees by controlling the degree of generalization
Coin-turning, Random Walks And Inhomogeneous Markov Chains
This research monograph explores new frontiers in Markov chains. Although time-homogeneous Markov chains are well understood, this is not at all the case with time-inhomogeneous ones. The book, after a review on the classical theory of homogeneous chains, including the electrical network approach, introduces several new models which involve inhomogeneous chains as well as related new types of rand
Coins, glass shards and other means of payment - A comparative study of Scandinavian Charon object burials using R. Dawkins’ meme theory
The purpose of this thesis’ topic is to investigate the evolutionary dispersal of the Charon’s fee or Obolus rite outside the Roman provinces in Northern Europe, with a specific focus on Roman Iron Age and Migration Period Scandinavia. The aim of this study is therefore to add further understanding to the spread of Roman cultural influences outside the imperial borders and what made Roman material
Contradictions in care: Ward nurses’ experiences of work and management in the Swedish public sector
In Sweden, austerity politics and market reforms have resulted in a renegotiation of working conditions negatively impacting female-dominated public sector- and welfare state workers. A growing body of research locates the harshening conditions of nurses in a context of colliding logics between professions and professional authority, the specificities of interpersonal work, and public sector restrIn Sweden, austerity politics and market reforms have resulted in a renegotiation of working conditions negatively impacting female-dominated public sector- and welfare state workers. Coins have both sides : Revealing the structure and pattern of global interdependence network for five critical metals
Evaluating the trade interdependence among countries is the key to understanding critical metal minerals security. By constructing a novel interdependence network, this paper reveals a more comprehensive world hierarchy and risk system of critical metals, and focuses on the interdependencies between China and the US-led MSP countries before and after the Sino-US trade disputes. The results indicat

The Other Side of the Coins : The Environmental Impact of Greenfield FDI in Sub-Saharan Africa´s Pollution-Intensive Industries and the Role of Governance
While foreign direct investments (FDI) are promoted as a vehicle for economic development their environmental consequences are less estab-lished. This study tests the hypotheses that 1) FDI led to environmental deg-radation in form of increased greenhouse gas emissions during Sub-Saharan Africa´s recent growth spurt but that 2) this impact was felt to a lesser extent in countries with a higher qua

Are aggressive pituitary tumors and carcinomas two sides of the same coin? Pathologists reply to clinician’s questions
Pituitary adenohypophyseal tumors are considered as benign and termed “adenomas”. However, many tumors are invasive and a proportion of these exhibit an “aggressive behavior” with premature death due to progressive growth. Only very rare (0.2%) tumors with metastases are considered malignant and termed “carcinomas”. Taking into account this variability in behavior and the oncological definition, p
Public diplomacy and development communication : Two sides of the same coin?
This chapter seeks to develop a theoretical basis for better understanding the intersections between public diplomacy (PD) and development communication (Devcom). It will be argued that both fields involve (1) theories of influence over social change in foreign countries; (2) a voluntary transfer of resources from an actor promoting a specific cause or agenda to a group or organization in a foreig
Cancer and autoimmunity: two sides of the same coin. Complement system proteins in the regulation of immune responses.
Factor H is an inhibitor of the complement system, essential for controlling the alternative pathway and also playing a crucial role in various cellular functions. In this thesis, we identified new intriguing functions of FH as a survival factor for primary human monocytes, promoting their differentiation into immunosuppressive macrophages. We showed that FH is expressed by human breast cancer cel
Two sides of the same coin?
Purpose: This study’s purpose is to study the long term effects of M&A and to examine whether stock price is the only determinant of post-merger performance or if operating performance can be used as an additional determinant. How underlying variables impact these measures are also part of this study´s purpose. Methodology: A quantitative approach is used where two event studies are conducte

Explaining environmental behavior with values, worldviews, and self-construal: Different sides of the same coin?
Values, worldviews, and self-construal are strong correlates of pro-environmental behavior. In this brief empirical note, we argue that these constructs overlap conceptually and share underlying dimensions. Using an international sample of 11,964 individuals, we demonstrate that values, worldviews, and self-construal can be reduced to two dimensions, self-focus and other-focus, capturing 67 % of v
