Methods for determination of duration of surface moisture and presence of water in gaps in wood joints

If water stays on wood surfaces or is trapped in gaps, the wood is supplied with water for a long period of time and high local moisture contents are reached. This can lead to decay by rot fungi, and it is therefore important to avoid such water traps in order to limit the decay rate. This paper presents two methods: one for determination of duration of surface moisture on wood surfaces and one fo

Extending autonomy by substituting judgment: A case of mistaken identity

According to the so-called Substituted Judgment Standard, a surrogate decision maker, acting on behalf of an incompetent patient, ought to make that health care decision which the patient would have made, had the latter been competent. The most common way of justifying the Substituted Judgment Standard is to maintain that this standard extends patients’ opportunities for self-determination to situ

Nalkas psykologin människan från fel håll?

Does psychology approach personality from the wrong direction? The present text argues that conventional personality psychology, spproaching its object of study from "above", i.e., mapping out the individual´s consciously held attitudes and view of him-/herself, has chosen the wrong path to a tenable science of personality. The alternative would be to scrutinize the processes by which the perceive

North versus South: Energy transition and energy intensity in Europe over 200 years

The paper examines energy consumption in Sweden, Holland, Italy and Spain over 200 years, including both traditional and modern energy car-riers. The article is based on totally new series of energy consumption in-cluding traditional carriers along with modern sources. Our main purposes are a closer examination of the process of the energy transition in Europe and a revision of the prevailing idea

The classification of p-compact groups for p odd

A p-compact group, as defined by Dwyer and Wilkerson, is a purely homotopically defined p-local analog of a compact Lie group. It has long been the hope, and later the conjecture, that these objects should have a classification similar to the classification of compact Lie groups. In this paper we finish the proof of this conjecture, for p an odd prime, proving that there is a one-to-one correspond

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the arguments for and against different nominal GDP targets and to answer whether or not such a target might be appropriate for Sweden. My research question reads as follows: Is a nominal GDP target appropriate for Sweden? The theoretical arguments for and against nominal GDP targets have been analysed by conducting a literature study. The conclusion is that a

Expression of Aedes aegypti painless protein for structural studies : Production, solubilization, and purification of membrane proteins

Aedes aegypti is one of the most lethal disease vectors in modern history, spreading a majority of the deadliest diseases mediated by mosquitos. To try and combat this, mankind has, for a long time, tried to create repellents to keep the insects away. These repellents affect receptors in the mosquitos, keeping them at bay. One receptor that is highly expressed in the mosquito’s prey/host sensory o

Ränteparitetsteoremet i kriser - en empirisk studie

The covered interest rate parity (CIP) states that the difference in interest rate between two identical assets, denominated in different currencies, should explain the difference between the spot price and the forward price in the foreign exchange markets. However, empirical studies have suggested that the CIP condition does not always hold. This study empirically tests the CIP condition during t

A Study on Language Attitudes towards Swedish and English with Focus on Linguistic Imperialism and Coloniality

The focus of this paper is linguistic imperialism and coloniality. This was researched by investigating the language attitudes of students and alumni in the language teacher programs and their professors at Lund University. The control group consisted of students at Lund University who had not studied language or linguistics. The research was conducted through a questionnaire and deeper interviews

Strategy & Entrepreneurship

The times when the chances that incremental optimisation of organisations could lead to sustained competitive advantage were great seem long gone. In today’s economy, organisations aspiring to reap any advantage at all will most likely be forced to master the reinvention of their business models on a regular basis – or better still, create new ones. The strategists and decision-makers who can comb

Trade and FDI Effect on Wages: Evidence from 20 OECD Countries

This study analyzes trade and FDI effect on wages in the 20 OECD countries. These countries are divided into six samples according to their geographical position. Panel cointegration and panel OLS methods are conducted during the study. The empirical model is built up on the base of the study of Onaran and Stockhammer (2006). The panel cointegration results show that there is a long-run relationsh

Role shifts within the working day : a phenomenological pilot study of how emloyees experience role shifts

The aim of this study is to explore how people during their working day experience role shifts if they on the whole experience or are aware of any role shift. Do they need time to adjust themselves to different roles? To find out about this a pilot study with a phenomenological approach was performed by having 4 participants write short diaries about their thoughts, feelings and ideas when they ex

NATO - En analys av alliansens syn på fred- och säkerhetsbegreppet

Maintaining peace and security has during a long time been the goal and concern of the international community. What must be noticed is the fact that its concept is changing and adapting to the incessant changes of the world and therefore also the meaning of peace and security follows the same pattern of change. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has since its outset been an actor who

Tråkigt på jobbet : dokumentstyrning av revisorer och lärare

Bored at work – Auditors and teachers under management by documentsThe aim is to investigate how experiences of work amongst teachers and auditors change as a shift from input control towards action control is implemented through management by documents. The study is based on interviews with auditors and teachers with long professional experience. The result shows that action control of profession

Dynamic response analysis of pilot control globe valve focusing on opening and closing time of pilot valve

Pilot control globe valve (PCGV) can use the pressure difference produced by fluid itself to realize the opening and closing states with a pilot valve. In this paper, numerical method is used to investigate the fluid flow characteristics and the valve core movement inside PCGV under different opening and closing times of pilot valve. The result shows that, shorter opening and closing time of valve

Gendered Justice Gaps in Bosnia-Herzegovina

A gendered reading of the liberal peacebuilding and transitional justice project in Bosnia–Herzegovina raises critical questions concerning the quality of the peace one hopes to achieve in transitional societies. By focusing on three-gendered justice gaps—the accountability, acknowledgement, and reparations gaps—this article examines structural constraints for women to engage in shaping and implem

Complexation between antimicrobial peptides and polyelectrolytes

As a result of increasing bacterial resistance against antibiotics, we are facing an emerging health crisis, in which ‘simple’ infections may no longer be treatable. One class of molecules attracting interest in this context is antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), and considerable research efforts have been directed to identifying selective and potent AMPs. In addition, since in vivo delivery of AMPs is

Analysis of stresses in aluminum particles embedded inside unidirectional and woven graphite/polyimide composites subjected to large bending loads

The effect of large bending loads on strains and stresses inside aluminum particles embedded in unidirectional and woven eight harness satin (8HS) graphite/PMR-15 composites has been examined. The stresses and strains in the particles were determined by performing X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. It has been shown in this work that when the composites are subjected to large four-point bending
