Proteomic and biomechanical properties of human menisci related to osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and is expected to become even more prevalent worldwide with an increasingly older and more obese population. The degenerative joint disease, causing pain, swelling and stiffness in the joints, has a complex etiology and knowledge of the pathophysiological mechanisms is still limited. Recent studies have however reported that the meniscus plays a

Unified theory and experimental approach for measuring restricted diffusion and water exchange

Fifteen million people lose their lives to stroke and cancer every year. This amounts to one in every four deaths worldwide, making these among the deadliest diseases affecting humankind. Fruitful attempts at containing stroke- and cancer-related mortality hinge on early detection. Diffusion MRI (dMRI) is an imaging modality that is sensitive to tissue microstructure, and therefore unveils tissue

Investigations of immune population subsets in bladder cancer

Finns det andra sätt att stäThe development of immunotherapeutic drugs has revolutionized cancer treatment and highlighted the immune system’s key role in combating cancer. Although immunotherapy has shown remarkable clinical benefits, treatment efficacy varies and low response rates are reported in several cancer types, including bladder cancer (BC). Although approved immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have demonstrated lo

In our part of the world the EU with it’s advantages and disadvantages concerning the free movement of capital, people and business affects us all, but also our taxes. Companies, big and small are in the centre of the cross-border trade with their expansion into new markets. Business adventures of this kind can generate incre

A global meta-analysis reveals consistently negative effects of ocean acidification on marine cultured bivalves : implications for future bivalve aquaculture

The exponential rise in atmospheric CO₂ driven by human activities is accelerating climate change and causing ocean acidification (OA). While the effects of elevated CO₂ on a wide range of marine species have been well documented, the implications of OA for bivalve aquaculture have received comparatively little attention. Using a multi-level meta-analytical approach, we evaluated the impacts of tw

Quantitative landscape dynamics in Denmark through the last three millennia based on the landscape reconstruction algorithm approach

This paper explores the spatial and temporal land-cover variability within the main cultural landscape units in Denmark during the last 3,000 years. Quantitative estimates of the cover of trees, grasses, Cerealia and Calluna around nine Danish lakes were obtained using the recently developed Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm (LRA) (Sugita 2007a, b). The performance of the approach was evaluated b

Biodiversity in temperate European grasslands: origin and conservation.

Northern Europe is in the forest zone, but wild megaherbivores have maintained grass-dominated vegetation here for the last 1.8 million years. Continuity of the grassland biome through glacialinterglacial cycles and connection to steppe vegetation has resulted in the evolution, immigration, and survival of a large number of grassland species. During the last millennia the effect of wild ungulates

Agricultural resilience building at the farm level in Malawi : the relevance of indigenous knowledge

Anthropogenic climate change poses new challenges to smallholder farmers in the Global South. At the farm level, science-based adaptation measures, as well as farmers’ autonomous responses based on indigenous knowledge, are simultaneously in use. This thesis investigates their linkages by assessing the role of indigenous knowledge for the development of modern climate change adaptation strategies

Multi-scale Habitat Suitability Modeling: Predicting Capercaillie Lek Sites in Northern Sweden Using a Machine Learning Approach

This study aimed to develop a multi-scale habitat suitability model for capercaillie lek sites in the northern Swedish forest counties, and further evaluate its potential to identify priority areas for future field survey effo

Här kan människor från stadens alla hörn och besökare utifrån samlas krinThe fact that food is something that we all have in common and that it brings people together has been the starting point for this thesis work. The project has resulted in a vibrant food center in the future city district Nyhamnen in Malmö. Here people from all over the city can gather around the People’s Kitchen and Diner, a wine bar, urban farming facilities, food markets and more. The inspirati

Wind erosion on arable land in Scania, Sweden and the relation to the wind climate - a review

This paper addresses variations in the wind climate in relation to changes in the impact of wind erosion on agricultural lands with Scania, the southernmost province of Sweden, as an example. The literature concerning wind erosion in the region is reviewed and the conclusions are linked to recent analyses of the regional wind climate. Presently, wind erosion occasionally induces problems in light
