The Arctic, an area mainly located north of the Arctic Circle, is believed to hold very large potential of the world’s yet-to-be discovered oil and gas reserves. In addition, th

It is an examination of the materiality of the book, in which the form and function, economics and distribution of the binding during the last century of the hand-press era are studied. The intention has been to show that the ready-bound book was a means for t

We use a field experiment in a lunch restaurant to analyze how meal attributes and a “nudge” impact healthy labeled meal consumption. The nudge consists of increasing the salience of healthy labeled meals by placing them at the top of the menu. We find that certain meal attributes (e.g. poultry and red meat) greatly increase both sales and the market share of the healthy labeled meal. We conclude

In this chapter, the authors challenge the myth that more is always better and that sufficiency – a principle of having enough but not excess – would mean deprivation, sacrifice, and the end of modern life. Instead, they argue that sufficiency is a pathway to a more just, fulfilling, and sustainable future. Drawing on existing research and a growing body of practice, they highlight five key argume

The current fashion system known as Fast Fashion (FF) is responsible for severe environmental and social impacts. Fashion democratisation has increased consumers’ appetite for new trends, leading fashion companies to design an increasing number of collections per year. Manufacturing is outsourced to developing countries, where workers’ rights and working place regulations are hardly respected. Add

In this paper we address the energy consumption of the Constraint Application Protocol (CoAP) and the Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol and compare their overhead. We also pay attention to the use case of security in IoT and analyze the energy consumption when using TLS/DTLS for the two protocols. In our experiments we use ESP32 with libcoap, MQTT, and mbed TLS libraries and conduc

Abstract Presently we have a record of the highest temperatures ever recorded and the trend is for even higher temperatures. At what rate this trend will continue is chiefly determined by what and how humans choose to consume resources. (IPCC 2001a) A change in behavior is called for, but in order for success we must gain a common understanding that all will benefit if individual action is restrai

The breaching of planetary boundaries and excessive extraction of natural resources requires a revisited approach to consumption and production. The concept of sufficiency, which advocates meeting human needs within the planetary limits by curbing excessive consumption levels, is gaining increasing attention. Businesses are drivers of consumption, yet they have been largely overlooked as potential

According to Reinhart and Rogoff (2009), credit booms have been associated with financial instability and crisis for as long as 800 years. Notwithstanding, the debate on the sustainability of increased indebtedness in the world economy has regained importance, as trends for both public and private debt show rapid rises in the last three decades. To understand the effect of debt accumulation on gro

I investigate how temperature variations influence time allocation for the consumption of various goods and services, focusing on essential and non-essential consumption. Using data from the American Time Use Survey (ATUS) and National Oceanic and AtmosphericAdministration (NOAA)'s weather records, I employ fixed-effects regression models to estimate the nonlinear impact of maximum temperature

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis is a leading cause of disability worldwide. Current treatment supports coping strategies to improve health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The need to predict response to treatment has been raised to personalise care. This study aims to examine change in HRQoL from baseline to three and nine months follow-up after participating in a Supported Osteoarthritis Self-Managem
