Waiting for orthopaedic surgery: factors associated with waiting times and patients' opinion

Objectives. To assess waiting times for three groups of orthopaedic patients in Sweden and to identify factors explaining variations in waiting time. Also examined were factors associated with patients' perceptions that waiting times were too long. Design. Retrospective study. Setting and study participants. Patients from orthopaedic units at 10 Swedish hospitals participated in the study. A quest

Applying concurrent engineering in an established multi-site companya concurrent process for a developing and manufacturing company’s new product introduction in production.

Background As new product development is becoming more important due to higher and more global competition the new product introduction process needs to be efficient in order to launch new products before they become obsolete. Therefore, a more efficient development process with integrated functions is needed. Concurrent engineering claims to be this and has support in much research. However, conc

The performance of time-varying volatility and regime switching models in estimating Value-at-Risk

Markov Regime-Switching GARCH (MRS-GARCH) models have been gaining popularity due to their ability to account for shifts volatility regimes that tend to characterize returns series. Previous empirical studies have shown that this capacity to capture the volatility dynamics leads to a superior forecasting power of the MRS models. We investigate the performance of these models in quantifying and man

Determinants of Location in Outward U.S. Foreign Direct Investment

The flow of capital across borders through foreign direct investment has become a major driver in the world economy and continues to gain prominence due to the rise of Asia and other emerging markets. The United States, as the largest economy in the world for over half a century, has played a crucial role in this capital flow. Everyday, millions of private U.S. dollars pour across borders towards

Annual cycle and migration strategies of a trans-saharan migratory songbird: a geolocator study in the great reed warbler.

Recent technological advancements now allow us to obtain geographical position data for a wide range of animal movements. Here we used light-level geolocators to study the annual migration cycle in great reed warblers (Acrocephalus arundinaceus), a passerine bird breeding in Eurasia and wintering in sub-Saharan Africa. We were specifically interested in seasonal strategies in routes and schedules

Individual Placement and Support (IPS) for persons with severe mental illness -Outcomes of a randomised controlled trial in Sweden

För pIn the light of the limited research on the subject of Individual Placement and Support (IPS) in a Swedish context, this thesis has contributed with knowledge of the effectiveness and experiences of IPS among persons with severe mental illness (SMI) living in Sweden. The thesis has also provided information about the work motivation among those persons with SMI who seek vocational support by IPS.

Simulated Climate Change Enhances Microbial Drought Resilience in Ethiopian Croplands but Not Forests

Climate change and land-use change represent a dual threat to terrestrial ecosystem functioning. In the tropics, forest conversion to agriculture is occurring alongside warming and more pronounced periods of drought. Rainfall after drought induces enormous dynamics in microbial growth (potential soil carbon storage) and respiration (determining carbon loss), affecting the ecosystem carbon budget.

Conducting a registry-based randomised trial (REDOX) in chronic respiratory failure : experiences and advice

Registry-based randomised controlled trials (R-RCTs) represent a paradigm shift in research, with the potential to accomplish pragmatic but large trials with high external validity. In this paper, we review our experiences from planning and performing the REgistry-based randomised controlled trial of treatment Duration and mortality in long-term OXygen therapy (REDOX) trial, the first R-RCT within

Making Blue Carbon : Coastal Ecosystems at the Science-Policy Interface

The message from the scientific community is clear: we need to act fast and profoundly. The political response has, however, been slow. The likelihood that we will be able to meet our political climate goals only by reducing emissions is slim. Meanwhile is the interest around ways to capture carbon dioxide that has already been emitted on the rise. In

The Health Returns of University Eligibility

This paper exploits an arbitrary university eligibility rule in Sweden combined with regression discontinuity to estimate the impact of university education on health derived demand for medical care. We find a clear jump in university attendance due to university eligibility of between 10 and 14 percentage points. For females this implies a 30-40% drop in self-harm. For males it coincides with red

Contrasting dynamics and environmental controls of dispersed bacteria along a hydrologic gradient

Freshwater bacterioplankton communities are influenced by the transport of bacteria from the surrounding terrestrial environments. It has been shown that, although most of these dispersed bacteria gradually disappear along the hydrologic continuum, some can thrive in aquatic systems and become dominant, leading to a gradual succession of communities. Here we aimed at exploring the environmental fa

Effects of eucalyptus plantations on avian and herb species richness and composition in North-West Spain

Eucalyptus plantations have been established in many areas of the world due to their fast growth and profitability. In NW Spain, Eucalyptus plantations now cover a larger area than native forests. Although Eucalyptus plantations have been shown to affect biodiversity, relatively few studies have compared their effect on multiple taxonomic groups and different aspects of biodiversity. We compared h

Genetic correlations and their dependence on environmental similarity : insights from livestock data

Genetic correlations for a trait across environments are predicted to decrease as environments diverge. However, estimates ofgenetic correlations from natural populations are typically defined across a limited environmental range and prone to very largestandard errors, making it difficult to test this prediction. We address the importance of environmental distance on genetic cor-relations by employiGenetic correlations for a trait across environments are predicted to decrease as environments diverge.
