Child-Friendly Environments—What, How and by Whom?

The socio-physical qualities of built environments are, in several ways, of imperative importance for children growing up. The Child-Friendly Cities initiative by UNICEF, an implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, has made local governments strive toward child-friendliness. The participation of children and young people is often the focus of such projects, with a potential The socio-physical qualities of built environments are, in several ways, of imperative importance for children growing up. Bismuth oxymetallate-modified biochar derived from Euryale ferox husk for efficient removal of Congo red from wastewater : adsorption behavior and mechanisms

Using Euryale ferox husk as raw material, pristine biochar (EBC), Bi2MoO6-modified biochar (BM-EBC), and BiFeO3-modified biochar (BF-EBC) were prepared and employed for decontaminating Congo red (CR) from wastewater. Compared with EBC (217.59 mg/g) and BF-EBC (359.49 mg/g), a superior adsorption capacity of 460.77 mg/g was achieved by BM-EBC. Based on the evaluation results of the Freundlich and p

Effect of Submonolayer ZnS Shell on Biexciton Dynamics of Indium Phosphide Quantum Dots

Understanding high-order biexciton dynamics is important for the use of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) in optoelectronic devices. The core–shell structure can be used to modulate biexciton dynamics by varying the shell thickness and core–shell energy band alignment. In this study, the biexciton dynamics in an unconventional case in which each QD is encapsulated by a submonolayer shell are demons

Together but still alone - A qualitative study exploring how family members of persons with incurable oesophageal or gastric cancer manage everyday life

Background: Cancer affects not only the person with the disease but those around them. Being a family member is described as strenuous and, often, associated with stress, anxiety and feelings of loneliness. There is a heightened risk of distress for family of those with fast-progressing, severe oesophageal or gastric cancer. Early palliative care involving family is vital yet often overlooked. In

What is the research impact of (the ideal of) scientific truth?

This conceptual paper addresses how the emergent impact agenda is slowly but surely changing the normative framework of modern science. In order to understand such a cultural shift, we draw a chronology around the evaluation regime of research impact and identify a causal mechanism that changes the disciplinary structure of the research ecosystem. We draw upon a sociological model of scientific kn

Payment of salary

This page provides information about payment of salary. Register absences on time to get the correct salary In order for you to receive the correct salary at the end of the month, and to avoid a so-called salary debt arising, it is important to register absence that affect your salary in time. For instance: Illness and care of children (vab) must be registered on the first day of absence.Applicati

The Entrepreneurial City in a Scandinavian Context - A Conceptual and Political Challenge?

The territorial dimensions of the state are undergoing substantial changes. New political entities – such as cities and regions – are gaining in importance. Cities and regions are using different strategies in order to strengthen their position in the inter-regional competition. At first, the Swedish experience seems to be an exception to this general development. The relatively small cities of Sw

Biosensor-based Methods for Detection of Microcystins as Early Warning Systems

Popular Abstract in English Global invasion of our precious watercourses by cyanobacteria poses great threat to human- and animal health by deteriorating water systems. In fact, this problem is not likely to be solved in the near future as cyanobacteria are associated with pollution of waterways. Consequently, water sources are subject to contamination by natural toxins produced by abundant growthCyanobacteria blooms are a water menace since they produce potent toxins that have been implicated in poisonings and deaths of humans and animals after consumption or contact with cyanotoxin-contaminated water. Of particular concern are cyanotoxins called microcystins, which are hepatotoxic cyclic peptides known to promote development of liver tumors in humans and animals. The high toxicity and in

Turning older people’s experiences into innovations: ippi as the convergence of mobile services and TV viewing

This paper presents the results of a research project in which a patented system for asynchronous communication (“ippi”) is used as the basis for a prototype communication device utilizing the participants’ televisions as the primary interface. The aim was to study the extent to which older people’s lifelong experiences watching TV reduced their uncertainty when faced with TV-based applications. T

Highly functional tunnelling devices integrated in 3D

We present a new technology for integrating tunnelling devices in three dimensions. These devices are fabricated by the combination of the growth of semiconductor heterostructures with the controlled introduction of metallic elements into an epitaxial layer by an overgrowth technique. First, we use a new type of tunnelling transistor, namely a resonant-tunnelling permeable base transistor. A simpl

Constitutional downregulation of SEMA5A expression in autism

There is strong evidence for the importance of genetic factors in idiopathic autism. The results from independent twin and family studies suggest that the disorder is caused by the action of several genes, possibly acting epistatically. We have used cDNA microarray technology for the identification of constitutional changes in the gene expression profile associated with idiopathic autism. Samples

{alpha}1-antitrypsin Inhibits the Activity of the Matriptase Catalytic Domain in vitro.

Matriptase is a type II transmembrane protease which is characterized by an N-terminal transmembrane and multiple extracellular domains, in addition to the conserved extracellular serine protease catalytic domain. The expression pattern of matriptase suggests that this protease may play broad roles in the biology of surface lining epithelial cells. In this study we report that alpha1-antitrypsin (

Coping after trans-femoral amputation due to trauma or tumour--a phenomenological approach.

Purpose: To describe, by use of a phenomenological approach, how relatively young trans-femoral amputees experienced their amputation and their coping strategies in the acute phase and over time. Method: Eleven trans-femoral amputees, median age 33.5 years, were interviewed. The amputation was caused by tumour, motorcycle accidents or work-related traumas. Amputation was made in median 7.5 years

Mimer - Developing a low-cost, heavy-duty reconnaissance robot for use in Urban Search and Rescue operations

Detta projekt dokumenterar det första stRobots currently exist that are specifically designed for use in the wake of disasters to help rescue teams in their work of locating and rescuing individuals trapped in confined spaces. However, they are prohibitively expensive which limits their adoption and causes the operators to think twice before they're deploying a robot with the risk of losing or damaging it. This project details the f

Snny-20140303-05 1
