A training ground for cell and gene therapies: New pre-GMP facility aims to smooth the path from idea to patient

When research findings are ready to make the leap from the lab to the patient, the requirements become much stricter. That is precisely where many promising projects start to falter. “We want to be the bridge between research and the patient, so that promising projects don’t get stuck in that difficult transition,” says Sara Nolbrant, director of the new pre-GMP facility. And with that, she disapp

Harmful exposure in metal recycling

The metal recycling industry is growing, not least due to the use of metals in green energy electronic components. Researchers at Lund University have examined the inhaled air of workers at 13 recycling companies in Sweden. Among the results, high levels of lead in air and elevated levels of multiple metals were detected in the blood of those who work in recycling. Different forms of metals are in

Central Asian migrant workers risk mass unemployment

The economic sanctions against Russian following the invasion of Ukraine are having spillover effects in Central Asia. The fall of the  Russian rouble in March - as a consequence of Western sancti

New research unlocking the secrets in our blood of early death and disease risk

Being able to predict diseases before they develop has become somewhat akin to the search for the Holy Grail. The difference is that research has a greater chance of success in finding what they are looking for than King Arthur's knights did. And in many cases, there are significant health benefits to being able to predict disease risk early: prevention is better than cure. Biomarkers are trace el

Poorer learning if teaching is anglicised

“English is like a membrane between us and reality”. The quote comes from a teacher at a Swedish higher education institution and describes their experience of teaching Swedish students in English. “Today, there are often no educational reasons why a particular course in the first-cycle is taught in English,” says Peter Svensson, senior lecturer in Business Administration at the School of Economic
