Växelvärme, Nulägesbeskrivning och effektiviseringspotential

Track switches are vital parts in the railway construction. They meet an important feature when planing and stearing the traffic flow through them to increase capacity. To ensure functionality during winter they have since the 50- century systematically installed switch heating with different technical solutions but with the same objective, to keep the moving parts on the switch free from snow and

Transition Layer Assisted Synthesis of Defect Free Amine-Phosphine Based InP QDs

Environmentally friendly InP-based quantum dots (QDs) are promising for light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and display applications. So far, the synthesis of highly emitting InP-based QDs via safe and economically viable amine-phosphine remains a challenge. Herein, we report the synthesis of amine-phosphine based InP/ZnSe/ZnS QDs by introducing an alloyed oxidation-free In-ZnSe transition layer (TL) at

A Reduced Deck of Conversation Cards of Wishes and Priorities of Patients in Palliative Care

The individual wishes and priorities of patients with advanced disease are too often neglected, making a deck of cards with statements reflecting potential wishes and priorities a useful conversation tool. However, in the most ill patients, the card selection and sorting process may be too strenuous. The aims of this study were to explore the wishes and priorities of patients receiving palliative

An experimental study of the flow around a circular cylinder: Influence of aspect ratio

The investigation is concentrated on two important quantities – the Strouhal number and the mean base suction coefficient, both measured at the mid-span position. Reynolds numbers from about 50 to 4 × 104 were investigated. Different aspect ratios, at low blockage ratios, were achieved by varying the distance between circular end plates (end plate diameter ratios between 10 and 30). It was not pos

Cellular DNA content and prognosis of high-grade soft tissue sarcoma: the Scandinavian Sarcoma Group experience

The nuclear DNA content of 148 high-grade soft tissue sarcomas of the extremities and trunk was determined by flow cytometry, using tumor material from paraffin-embedded tissue. The patients were part of a prospective randomized clinical trial on the efficacy of adjuvant single-agent chemotherapy with doxorubicin. Chemotherapy did not improve the metastasis-free survival (MFS). After a median foll

Inorganic ligand effects on Pb(II) sorption to goethite (alpha-FeOOH) - II. Sulfate

The effects of sulfate anions on the uptake of Pb(II) onto goethite were investigated at the molecular level using in situ Pb L-III-EXAFS and ATR-FTIR spectroscopies. Macroscopic uptake data show that Pb uptake can be enhanced by at least 30% at pH 5 in the presence of 3.16 mM sulfate and that sulfate uptake at pH 7 can be enhanced by more than a factor of 3 in the presence of 1.0 mM Pb. Consisten

A multipurpose capacitive biosensor for assay and quality control of human immunoglobulin G.

We report a flow-injection biosensor system with a capacitive transducer for assay and quality control of human immunoglobulin G (hIgG). The sensing platform is based on self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of carboxylic acid terminated alkyl-thiols with covalently attached concanavalin A. The electrochemical characteristics of the sensor surface were assessed by cyclic voltammetry using a permeable r

Diffusive-ballistic heat transport in thin films using energy conserving dissipative particle dynamics

Diffusive-ballistic heat transport in thin films was simulated using energy conserving dissipative particle dynamics (DPDe). The solution domain was considered to be two-dimensional with DPD particles distributed uniformly under constant temperature boundary conditions at the top and bottom walls and periodic boundaries at the side walls. The effects of phonon mean free path were incorporated by i

High catechins/low caffeine powder from green tea leaves by pressurized liquid extraction and supercritical antisolvent precipitation

This paper reports a method to produce a solvent-free extract from green tea leaves with high content of catechins and low content of caffeine, in two steps and using only "green" solvents. The method is based on the pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) of the green tea leaves using ethyl lactate as solvent, followed by a selective precipitation procedure using the supercritical carbon dioxide (SCC

In vitro Transcription/Translation System: A Versatile Tool in the Search for Missing Proteins

Approximately 18% of all human genes purported to encode proteins have not been directly evidenced at the protein level, according to the validation criteria established by neXtProt, and are considered as “missing” proteins. One of the goals of the Chromosome-Centric Human Proteome Project (C-HPP) is to identify as many of these “missing” proteins as possible in human samples using mass spectromet

Isothermal microcalorimetry accurately detects bacteria, tumorous microtissues, and parasitic worms in a label-free well-plate assay

Isothermal microcalorimetry is a label-free assay that allows monitoring of enzymatic and metabolic activities. The technique has strengths, but most instruments have a low throughput, which has limited their use for bioassays. Here, an isothermal microcalorimeter, equipped with a vessel holder similar to a 48-well plate, was used. The increased throughput of this microcalorimeter makes it valuabl

Assessment of biological prognostic factors provides clinically relevant information in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma-a Nordic Lymphoma Group study.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the prognostic effects of four biological markers, BCL2, TP53, Ki-67, and P-glycoprotein, and their possible clinical relevance in addition to the international prognostic index (IPI) in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). A total of 405 patients with aggressive lymphoma, stage II-IV, between 18 and 67 years, were randomized in a trial comparing CHOP

Smooth muscle cell response to mechanical injury involves intracellular calcium release and ERK1/ERK2 phosphorylation

We have investigated possible signaling pathways coupled to injury-induced ERK1/2 activation and the subsequent initiation of vascular rat smooth muscle cell migration and proliferation. Aortic smooth muscle cells were cultured to confluency and subjected to in vitro injury under serum-free conditions. In fluo-4-loaded cells, injury induced a rapid wave of intracellular Ca(2+) release that propaga

Accurate T-1 Mapping for Oxygen-Enhanced MRI in the Mouse Lung Using a Segmented Inversion-Recovery Ultrashort Echo-Time Sequence

PurposeA segmented inversion-recovery module combined with the 2D ultrashort echo time radial technique is proposed that allows accurate pixel level T-1 mapping of mouse lung in vivo. MethodsNumerical simulations were performed to estimate T-1 measurement accuracy and precision versus flip angle and signal-to-noise ratio. Phantom measurements were used for protocol validation, where the segmented

Down-regulation of the strawberry Bet v 1-homologous allergen in concert with the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway in colorless strawberry mutant

Proteomic screening of strawberry (Fragaria ananassa) yielded a 58% success rate in protein identification in spite of the fact that no genomic sequence is available for this species. This was achieved by a combination of MALDI-MS/MS de novo sequencing of double-derivatized peptides and indel-tolerant searching against local protein databases built on both EST and full-length nucleotide sequences.
