Large-eddy simulation with a finite-rate chemistry model is carried out to investigate the formation of soot and nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the dual-fuel spray combustion. Liquid n-heptane is injected into a constant volume chamber, filled with a premixed methanol–air mixture with an equivalence ratio (ϕm) of 0.3. Three dual-fuel cases are simulated under initial temperatures of 900, 950 and 1000 K.

This work represents a detailed investigation of combustion and oxidation of methyl-3-hexenoate (CAS Number 2396-78-3), including experimental studies of combustion and oxidation characteristics, quantum chemistry calculations and kinetic model refinement. Following experiments have been carried out: Speciation measurements during oxidation in a jet-stirred reactor at 1 atm; chemical speciation me

Abdominal and general adiposity are independently associated with mortality, but there is no consensus on how best to assess abdominal adiposity. We compared the ability of alternative waist indices to complement body mass index (BMI) when assessing all-cause mortality. We used data from 352,985 participants in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) and Cox proport

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disease, and constitutes a large portion of patients admitted to gastroenterology units. We wanted to examine whether there is a need for patients with suspected IBS to have a thorough examination by a gastroenterologist to establish the diagnosis, or whether other specialist or subspecialist physicians could better or equally identify the problems. From

This work is aimed at presenting a comparison and detailed analysis of the existing experimental data of laminar burning velocities obtained for syngas flames using the heat flux method. The consistency of these data is essential in the development, validation, and optimization of combustion mechanisms. The core of the approach is the evaluation of any variability or inconsistency among the data o

Background: Video capsule enteroscopy (VCE) has revolutionized small bowel imaging, enabling visual examination of the mucosa of the entire small bowel, while MR enteroclysis (MRE) and CT enteroclysis (CTE) have largely replaced conventional barium enteroclysis. A new indication for MRE and CTE is the clinical suspicion of small bowel strictures, as indicated by delayed or non-delivery of a test c

This report summarizes the presentations and discussions during the Rapid Reaction Task Force “Dynamics of critical fluctuations: Theory – phenomenology – heavy-ion collisions”, which was organized by the ExtreMe Matter Institute EMMI and held at GSI, Darmstadt, Germany in April 2019. We address the current understanding of the dynamics of critical fluctuations in QCD and their measurement in heav

The association in aqueous mixtures of a thermoresponsive cationic diblock copolymer composed of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and poly(3-acrylamidopropyl)-trimethylammonium-chloride (PAMPTMA(+)) and the oppositely charged bile salt sodium deoxycholate (NaDC) is investigated at different compositions by light and X-ray scattering, calorimetry, and electrophoretic mobility measurements. This paper examines social class differences in fertility, using longitudinal micro-level data for a regionalsample in Sweden, 1922–2015. Using discrete-time event history models, we estimated the associationbetween social class and parity-specific duration to next birth, adjusting for household income in separatemodels. Social class was associated with fertility quite independently from income an

apolipoproteinM(apoM)mayserveaprotectiverole inthedevelopmentofinflammation.Nuclearfactor‑κB(nF-κB) and its downstream factors (including a number of inflammatory cytokines and adhesion molecules) are essential for the regulation of inflammatory processes. In the present study, the importance of apoM in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)‑induced acute inflammation and its potential underlying mechanisms, we

BACKGROUND: Although the impact of pancreatic infections in acute pancreatitis has been studied extensively, there are no population-based data on extrapancreatic infections and their potential relation to organ failure. We aimed to study the occurrence of pancreatic and extrapancreatic bacterial infections in acute pancreatitis and their relation to patient outcome. PATIENTS AND METHODS: All pati

Ants use memorized visual scenes to navigate towards food sources and to return to their nest. Two new studies show that both of these behaviors fail when structures of the ant brain known as mushroom bodies are chemically disrupted, confirming long-held assumptions about the location of ants’ visual navigation memories.

It is generally found that human capital has had positive effects on industrial development and economic growth, but the relationship between formal education, work practice, industrial development and economic growth, and the relationships between them over time, remains unclear, largely because of a lack of empirical evidence. This note argues that an investigation of the Danish dairy industry c
