Fabrication of phosphor micro-grids using proton beam lithography

A new nuclear microscopy technique called ion photon emission microscopy or IPEM was recently invented. IPEM allows analysis involving single ions, such as ion beam induced charge (IBIC) or single event upset (SEU) imaging using a slightly modified optical microscope. The spatial resolution of IPEM is currently limited to more than 10 mu m by the scattering and reflection of ion-induced photons, i

Utvärdering av utökat föräldradeltagande inom barnkirurgisk vård

The benefits of increased parental participation in the care of the hospitalised child is well documented, and care given by parents is found to be effective. To facilitate the child’s recovery by providing the parents with information and education about care, and to minimise disruption to the child’s and the family’s normal life the care after hypospadiasis repair was changed. Outcomes were eval

An instrument for determining the total water content in air when extinguishing fires

n instrument suitable for measuring the total water content both as small liquid droplets and as vapour in the air, in water mist total flooding extinguishing tests, is presented. The instrument consists of a heater and a Vaisala humidity meter. The Vaisala humidity meter is capable of measuring relative humidity at temperatures up to 180°C. The instrument has a measuring range of 0-600g/m3, a sam

Astronomical applications of quantum optics for extremely large telescopes

A programme has been started to investigate photon properties that are not currently exploited in astronomical instruments, namely second- and higher-order coherence functions encoded in their arrival time, and the orbital angular momentum. This paper expounds the first results achieved in the study of a novel astronomical photometer capable of pushing time tagging towards the picosecond region. T

INDO Calculations of Small Copper Clusters, and CO Adsorbed on Copper (100) Surfaces

A new parameterization for copper at the INDO/CI level is presented. Results for excitation energies, ionization potentials, and electron detachment energies are presented for selected copper clusters with up to ten atoms. The parameterization gives improved results for calculations of spectroscopic properties for systems with significant copper-copper interactions, such as clusters and model surf

How to avoid glucose degradation products in peritoneal dialysis fluids

Objective: The formation of glucose degradation products (GDPs) during sterilization of peritoneal dialysis fluids (PDFs) is one of the most important aspects of biocompatibility of glucose-containing PDFs. Producers of PDFs are thus trying to minimize the level of GDPs in their products. 3,4-Dideoxyglucosone-3-ene (3,4-DGE) has been identified as the most bioreactive GDP in PDFs. It exists in a t

Spot immunoprecipitate assay in gel compared with immune reactions in solution and applied to antibody titration

Precipitation profiles of spot immunoprecipitate assay (SIA) reactions in gel are shown to have characteristics analogous to classic precipitin curves representing such immune reactions in solution. Thus SIA profiles of precipitated human albumin (HSA) and anti-HSA as checkerboard analysis permit: (1) determination of optimal proportions of antibody and antigen, (2) titration of antiserum as to an

The effect of neuropeptide Y on mucociliary activity in the rabbit maxillary sinus

The effect of neuropeptide Y (NPY) on mucociliary activity in the rabbit maxillary sinus was investigated in vivo by injecting NPY at increasing dosages into the maxillary artery, response being recorded photoelectrically. At dosages of 0.1-5.0 micrograms/kg, NPY reduced mucociliary activity dose-dependently, the maximum decrease being 14.6 +/- 1.8%, at a dosage of 5.0 micrograms/kg. The NPY-induc

Modified phthalocyanines for efficient near-IR sensitization of nanostructured TiO(2) electrode.

A zinc phthalocyanine with tyrosine substituents (ZnPcTyr), modified for efficient far-red/near-IR performance in dye-sensitized nanostructured TiO(2) solar cells, and its reference, glycine-substituted zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPcGly), were synthesized and characterized. The compounds were studied spectroscopically, electrochemically, and photoelectrochemically. Incorporating tyrosine groups into ph

Response surfaces for climate change impact assessments in urban areas

Assessment of the impacts of climate change in real-world water systems, such as urban drainage networks, is a research priority for IPCC (intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change). The usual approach is to force a hydrological transformation model with a changed climate scenario. To tackle uncertainty, the model should be run with at least high, middle and low change scenarios. This paper shows

Effects of calcium and substrate on force-velocity relation and energy turnover in skinned smooth muscle of the guinea-pig

Mechanical properties and rate of ATP breakdown (JATP) have been determined in the chemically skinned guinea-pig taenia coli at 22 degrees C. The influence of varied [Ca2+], [Mg ATP] and muscle length were investigated. The shortening response after a step decrease in force (isotonic quick release) was highly curvilinear in the first 100-200 ms. This effect was shown to be a time-dependent respons

Reference data representative of normal findings at three-dimensional power Doppler ultrasound examination of the cervix from 17 to 41 gestational weeks.

Objectives To develop normal reference ranges for cervical volume and vascular indices using three-dimensional (3D) power Doppler ultrasonograpby from 17 to 41 gestational weeks. Methods This was a cross-sectional study of 352 nulliparous and 291 parous women who delivered at term and underwent transvaginal 3D power Doppler ultrasound examination of the cervix once at 17 to 41 weeks' gestation. We
