How did Scandinavia become Christian? What can ancient graves tell us about life and death a thousand years ago? And what did towns and villages actually look like back then? This course takes you through a time of major change – from the Viking Age to the early Middle Ages.
In this course, you explore how people lived in Scandinavia between the 8th and 12th centuries. Through studying both objects and written sources from the period, you learn what society looked like. You follow the shift from pagan beliefs to Christianity, discover how Viking burials reflect people's values, and examine how gender and social roles shaped everyday life. You also look into trade, plundering, and the rise of new economies, as well as how rural and urban landscapes developed.
