Round Table: Public Archaeology in Swedish Contract Archaeology
The two speakers are: Elin Arin and Åsa Berggren
This event consists of a short presentation, followed by an open discussion exploring the themes and questions outlined below. The goal is to generate ideas and feedback for a forthcoming review article to be written by the two presenters.
The article will trace the impact of Public Archaeology on Swedish contract archaeology over the last few decades. Public Archaeology can be read as an umbrella concept, including all communication with the public. However, the goal here is to explore how this concept might be used for a more inclusive archaeology, for example community based participatory research, inviting dialogue, co-creation etc. Has this way of thinking about public Archaeology made an impact in Sweden, and in that case how? The speakers would like to hear about your thoughts and experiences of Public Archaeology, whether it has been in the broader or more narrow sense of the concept.
Themes and Questions:
- How would you define Public Archaeology?
- What are your experiences of working in Public Archaeology as a contract archaeologist, or otherwise?
- If you have international experience, are there any similarities or differences compared to Sweden?
- Have you noticed any changes in how public archaeology is practiced over time?
